Sooo... I dont even know how to explain this without making him sound nuts haha. My boyfriends boss has totally convinced him to make a survival pack. Dave (his boss), is convinced that we are going to hit another depression. Thats not too far fetched seeing how our economy is. He's also convinced that once is does, there is going to be a massive rebellion. One that includes rioting and everyone being homeless. Pretty much the only way I can explain how he made it seem is imagine the post zombie outtbreak world in movies. Dave has all kinds of survival gear ready to go. Axes, -20 degree sleeping bags, hatchets, fire making equipment, all that good stuff...even a gun. I will defend his boos and say in no way is he nuts, he's a very sane, intelligent person. My boyfriend dragged me to wal mart yesterday and was looking at all the stuff in the sporting goods department. I put my foot down and told him we are NOT spending all kinds of money on a survival pack. On one hand, it makes me think he's lost his marbles, on the other hand...he kinda got me thinking. What's your opinion? I mean, you never know what could happen. I just think maybe that's a little too far gone as of right now.

I don’t think we’re going to hit another depression, at least not on the scale of the great depression, but I can see things getting worse. But I think I’ll pass on the survival pack.

I think it's a good idea to be prepared in a general way for emergencies, but once someone starts spending bread and butter money on this stuff it begins to seem like an obsession, or the expression of an anxiety that may be out of proportion to the situation, in which case, it's good to try to figure out what's going on. We have been through tough times like this before in the last 30 years and we're all still here.

I think it's a good idea to be prepared for serious emergencies. We had a 8 day power outage in the fall a few years ago and then a blizzard the following Feb (we were snowed in for 4 days while I was 8 months pregnant) that knocked some sense into us the hard way.

We now have a "kit" that is basically our camping gear, extra batteries, blankets, tarps, axe, propane, kerosene, lots of water, canned food and a good first aid kit. We have enough food and water for 2 weeks. Plus, one for the pets with heating disks and hot water bottles. You don't know how hard it is to get by without this stuff until it's gone so I'd rather not do any type of emergency without it again.

ETA: We did put some money into our kit but it was well worth it considering the days of heck I went through with kids at home, no power ANYWHERE in the city, starting to run out of food and just the general stress of the whole situation.

Oh wow...you have NO idea how much I sympathize!

In 1999, about half way through the year my mom turned our garage into a "safe zone" because she REALLY bought into all the Y2K crap. I'm talking cupboards and cupboards full of nonperishable food, blankets, water, etc. She was OBSESSED. We never talked about it after the year 2000 came around and NOTHING HAPPENED lol.

In my opinion you can never be too prepared. You never can tell when a serious emergency will arise. I live in CA, right on the Hayward Fault. We get earthquakes some what often. We're always getting PSAs about preparedness. Better safe than sorry. I also think it is a good idea to include a gun or two for safety's sake. I side with the bf, up until the point of obsession. You'll be glad to have such a kit if tragedy does strike.

Well...nothing is impossible. I THINK the economy is pretty doomed this time, maybe as bad as the great depression. With all the bailout plans, printing of billions of dollars (more to come and so the value of the dollar will depreciate), some say there is a possibility of hyper-inflation. If there really is a hyper-inflation, you can imagine what will happen. The streets won't be very safe...I just hope it won't happen. The HK dollar is pegged with USD, so we're on the same boat...

Ok, now that's weird! My UPS man was talking with us about the same exact thing today! That's too weird.

It'll get realllllly bad reallllly fast. I wouldn't put it past the severity of the 1930s. The recent foreclosure wave was the first of 3, with adjustable rate mortgages coming next, and then business loans/mortgages after that.

I 100% agree. And we're about due here, huh?
