Yeah, they bond better at that age, right? (rolls eyes) Just don't grow up knowing they're dogs half the time...

Not necessarily. The longer they stay with the mother the more dog skills they learn. Small dogs should stay with the mom and litter for like 10 weeks and larger dogs 8 weeks. The longer they are with the mom and litter the less behavioral problems long term, supposidly, as the pupps learn better communication skills and whatnot.

Cute pup

I was under the impression it was illegal to sell a puppy before 8 weeks. Disney got in big trouble over that with the movie snow puppies or something. The aspca is not allowed to sell puppies before 8 weeks either. I want to say it's in the AKC as well.
The pups need 8 weeks to bond with thier mom and get the full benefit of socialization and immunities from mom. I thought pups needed a vet clearance at 7/8 wks for worming, 2nd vax etc, too before being let go-I could be wrong on that though. I'd be a little concerned at this if I were your brother :(

It's not illegal everywhere so far as I'm aware...though I know it is in some places. The ASPCA has only 1 shelter....so I'm not sure what you're referring to there..... most shelters don't allow puppies to be adopted out under 8 weeks....but I dont' think there's any general law or anything.

Each state is different, as there is no national law. If you want to know if New Jersey has a law you contact your local humane society or spca to find out the legal selling age for puppies. Here is the akc's stand on it, and they recommend reporting any registered breeder doing this.

take your time. Beware of breeders who claim to have multiple breeds ready to ship immediately. It’s highly unlikely that your perfect puppy will be available for shipping on the very day you call. Gestation and socialization of a litter takes months -- no puppy should be separated from the dam before 8 weeks of age.

Here is the animal national law, maybe you'll understand a little more. I'm not knocking your brother for getting a puppy under 8 wks old, only trying to be informative for you and any one reading this who may look into getting a dog, and hope that the pup is healthy and ok. Also I meant the aspca/spca in general. The spca is not allowed to adopt out a pup under 8wks old, and they are under the aspca.

There is no national spca/aspca.........the aspca runs/oversees ONE shelter and there is no large "spca" organization.....almost every shelter/rescue is run individually and makes thier own policies. I think the HSUS oversees the operations of a group of shelters....but do not actually run any themselves.

I know its not good to take puppies under 8 weeks from their dams/siblings....I told my brother that....he didn't listen. I will see if I can report the breeder to the AKC...supposedly jax came from registered "champion" lines and one of his sisters is "show quality." I don't know the guy's name though...I'll have to see if I can find it

Just looked at the website my brother found jax on...turns out jax was 7 weeks to the day when he was picked up (and the photos were taken), which is PA state law. Not good...but not as bad as 6 weeks...and nothing I can do about it.

Yes, I was being sarcastic, but was definately advocating puppies staying with their mothers for longer in order to develop proper canine interaction behavior, etc.

how adorable. he reminds me of my old beagle/dachshund mix i had several years ago. i love beagles. such beautiful dogs.
and your brother looks a lot like my friend's bf, mason.
as for show quality, oh well. i have a full bred aussie but is definitely not show quality, but that means the little beagle is very well bred.
