Ok, so the clutchmate to my first enigma hatched, and I think his tail has a blood circulation problem...it's too pink, and the end is stubby.

Is this going to hurt him? Will it fall off?

If this is the worst deformity a 76* 8-12 hour temp fluke can do, I'm relieved, but I feel kinda bad about it. It's not his fault...he's perfect physically otherwise...he seems a little wobbly, too.

Should he be left out of breeding programs? I bet the answer is yes...*sigh*

It's way too soon to be able to tell anything about breeding, but as far as pain goes, I am sure he isn't in any. It just looks like the tail didn't fully form. Just keep an eye on him, and make sure he's able to eat well enough. Good luck with him!

I can't talk from a breeding aspect...

but he's dam cute that's for sure.

Actually there is a 3-4 month old albino baby at the local large chain pet store that has a tail just like that

I would say there's nothing wrong with the blood flow in his tail. All enigmas we've hatched have all had pink tails. As for the stubbed end, it's just a birth defect and the end of his tail never developed. Could be from genetics or a large fluctuation in incubation temperatures.

I wouldn't freak out about it at all. It's not like she's "ugly" or anything, it looks like she's missing only 1-2mm so it's not a devastating fault. And it's probably more of a developmental deformity rather than a genetic one, and is therefore fine to breed. If she doesn't show any other problems as she grows, of course. I have a gecko who is GORGEOUS, I'm so in love with her colors, but she has a slightly shorter tail than normal. But since she's nice and fat I think it looks great haha.

we bought a baby enigma from a show recently and her tail looks the same.

It was normal at first, but within a few days it got really pink, hard and kind of crusted off. It was only the end 2 or 3mm of her tail, and she acts normal still, and looks normal , apart from her shorter, slightly stubby tail

So, looking at the gecko in the morning, I've decided that the tail really is okay, just stubby. He also has some mild circling behavior, like he can't keep his balance. Not severe, he'll look at you and everything, but I'll be extra sure to make sure he learns to catch bugs after the first shed.

It's odd, when I found him in the incubator, his tail was super-pink; like the vessels were dilated or something, I could see them standing out. It isn't like that now. It didn't show in the photos, either. Is that just because of the circulatory system "initiating"? Like a pale baby pinking up in a few minutes?

I ask some really weird questions, don't I?

Thanks for the comments and reassurance, everyone. =)

It might have been from the effort of breaking through the egg haha. But yea, human babies are always a dark pink/purple color at birth and then they normalize. It's nothing to worry about.
