Hey everyone, just got my first leopard gecko. Suprisingly this little guy came from *****, it was housed with another adult gecko. This one is close to 6 months old. I think it's a patternless but I am not sure.

Yeah I was suprised to find this at peetco. Can anyone tell me if my current setup is alright. I have a 10 gallon tank that was an old fish tank. It has 2 lights, however I only have one light on, and it's on the hot side, along with a heat pad under the hot side. I have some humidity moss inside a moist box I made on the heat side, as well as just a simple hide which consists of a crystal light tube with a paper towel on the bottom of it, he is always in here. I also have another hide on the cool side, a hollowed out wood log. I haven't got a thermometer yet though. Need to do that. have a small water dish, and one for meal worms. I just got some crickets tonight, and put a fair amount of tropical fish food on the bottom to gutload them. Then I am going to roll them in calcium tomorrow before I toss em in tomorrow. The place I got it told me to feed it 4-6 large crickets every other day, because it is a 6 month old gecko, does this sound right? Sorry for the long post, been doin some research on leos for a while and want to make sure I got the basics covered.

Make sure you get a therm. asap because it may be too hot with the lamp and the heat pad, the heat pad will probably do it for you. As far as the crickets go you can feed them as much as they will eat. When my leo was 6 months old she ate 9 large crickets a day. Geckos very rarely over eat.

I only have one 25 watt bulb, and a heat pad on my warm side. I don't think it's too hot, but I will check today.

We're going to need a picture of the whole tank, or atleast a runndown of what is in there. You are 100% going to need a thermometer, so get one asap for sure! The longer you wiat the more likely something could go wrong (truly, you should have been prepaired before getting the gecko :main_no:) Here are the basic elements of a good leo cage:

-water bowl
-calcium bowl
-food bowl
-warm hide
-humid hide
-cool hide
-solid substrate, eg. paper towel, reptile carpet, etc, etc.
-any decorations you want to add
-warm side of around 90*f
-cool side of around 80*f

As you can see a thermometer is entirely neccisary for achieving the proper temps.

Truly, I was prepared, I have everything you listed minus a thermometer. Making a new member feel welcome :main_no:

Trust me, I've seen new members get beat up far worse. :main_yes: I don't think the comments were all that harsh. And we're all just trying to help you out by giving you tips to keep your leo happy and healthy. It will save you a lot of unnecessary stress along the way.

Just get a thermometer (or two) and place it (or them) close to the floor of the tank. Making sure the temps are correct is of MAJOR importance to the animal's helth, since the animal's digestive system depends on it. If you take care of this one thing, you should be all set. :)

Here is my setup... tryin to keep it simple (livin in the dorms) I will add more to the tank as I get more money. But were I have the hollow wood hide is the cool side. I just went out today and bought an actual food bowl, and not a milk top...LoL. I put 6 meal worms in there with calcium. On the warm side I have a simple moist box with humidifying moss that I moistend w/ warm water, and that other tube hide I made, which is a dry hide. He is ALWAYS in there. I've only had him for 2 days, eatin one meal worm, two crickets yesterday, and one today (I gutloaded them with tropical fish food, and rolled em in calcium b4 I tossed them in.) Just went and got my digital temp gauge with a probe. With the light off, it's about 88 degrees on top of the paper towels, but between the towels, closer to the glass it reads up to 94. With the 25 watt light on only on the warm side, and the combo of the under tank heater, it reads about 91, on top of the paper towels. Where does everyone mount there probes. And I haven't seen this gecko pass any stools since I've gotten him?... gettin a little worried. Cool side is around 78 degrees. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks
