I cut mine anywhere where it is clear. Do not cut on the black.

If you do cut through the black you break the cycle in that band rendering it useless. If you cut through the black run a length of electrical tape along the cut ends to insulate it from shocking you or worse.

Don't cut through the black! The place where you cut will be a HOT exposed element. It's bad enough that the two silver contact points end up exposed. Regardless where you cut, make sure you use ELECTRICAL tape to cover the exposed cut as you will get a nasty poke if you use metal tape to cover the cut or if you touch both contact points. Not to mention the fire hazard or what it would do to a poor unsuspecting gecko.

You don't need to have the heat tape fit perfectly on the shelf. I leave an inch on both ends of mine just to make it easier to tape down to the shelf and connect the leads. The tub won't reach that far anyway.

Tape the flexwatt down in a fashion that allows you to read the print on the tape.

Let's see some pictures!
