I've noticed that Luna, she's a female, is not eating like she used to...

dscn2744medium.jpg

This picture was taken in her previous enclosure, an Exo Terra... desert... whatever... tank... :main_rolleyes:

She used to hunt and eat 3-4 crickets or mealowrms a day, and now she's only eating 1 per day and
sometimes none and I have to put them in front of her or else she won't even bother to chase them...

I think that she's losing weight but I don't know for sure, also the black spots on her head are now brown, and it's not
because of shedding, she just shed 5 days ago... Speaking of wich, is it normal for a leopard gecko to shed 2/3 times a month?

I keep her in a 40gal enclosure that is located on my bedroom, (I don't think that it causes any stress to her because usually there's
no one inside and when there is, it's no close to it) the tank has 4 hiding spots, 2 dry and 2 wet. She has water, that I change
daily, allways at her reach, also she allways has dusted tenébrios on her food bowl or a few crickets running around the tank.

dscn2806medium.jpg

On the left is the worm side, and on the right the cold one

The temperature (celsius) on the warm side is 32º (it was only 27º when I took the picture because
I had the lid open for a couple minutes to take pictures), on the cold side 26º, humidity is usually 35/40%

I use paper towels as substrate. The heating comes from a 100w ceramic lamp (wich was not on the tank when I took the picture and is now
replacing the purple lamp you can see on it) and a 14w heating pad that is under the tank (directly under the big hide) on the left side of the tank.

Any idea what can be wrong so that she ain't eating? :main_huh:

Thanks and sorry for writing so much...

You could try raising the temps a few degrees. She may be slowing down because her temps are dropping too low. I keep my tank's warm side at about 34 C.

I don't know if tank size is causing a problem. I also keep my gecko in a 40 gal tank. She is doing just fine in it.

I really have to get a thermostate... The only way I currently have to control temps are using more, or less, lamps, and open or close the tank lid...

My opinion, besides what I told you before...

You should not keep running crickets around, they stress the gecko.

You have move her to a new terrarium, sometimes they can take a week or two to get used to it. Change of habitat is a major cause of stress for reptiles.

If it is getting dull colors then it is too cold, but you should note see that if the temperatures are not very distant from ideal. You can have a sense of her temperature just by grabbing her.

Yes, besides thermometers (that you have), a thermostat is essential. :)

I would not worry too much, for now...

One of my female won't eat a lot because it's winter. It's fine and yes use what the people provided above. A thermostat is really helpful.

How can I know when should I put crickets inside, since she doesn't eat them most of times? :main_huh:

She's in the new terrarium for almost a month now. She allways poops in the same place and and has
"chose" a hinding spot has her favorite... Doesn't that mean she's already adapted to the new "environment"? :main_huh:

She is usually warm when I grab her... Maybe not warm enough...? :main_huh::main_yes:

The thermostat is on it's way... ;)

What worries me the most is that she seems to be loosing weight... :main_rolleyes:

Many thanks :main_thumbsup:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they should not notice that it's winter, since they're inside a temperature "controled evironment" of they're own, right? :main_huh:

I raised the temperature, replaced the 75w Night Glo by a 100w ceramic lamp.

Thank you vey much :main_thumbsup:

Wait, what kind of lamp do you have?
I had a 75w Night Glo and replaced it by a 100w ceramic lamp.

Can that be the problem? :main_huh:

Thanks :)

Give her about 20 minutes to eat the crickets and then remove them.

Check the temps. 92-97 is where you want to be.

A lot of Leos lose weight in the winter so keep offering her food and hopefully she will start eating soon

The air temperature is what usually affects them.

That's it.

I just remembered something:

I usualy dust her food with Zoo Med's REPTITIVE Reptile Vitamins WITH D3

reptivitethumb.jpg

Is this supplement ok? Should I use another one or use something else besides the one I use? :main_huh:

Yes, that one is ok.

(As you know:) When they are younger they eat a lot and when they become adult they eat less. It could be just that combined with a perceived winter time.

Most of mine do not really eat much less in winter (due to the controlled temperature), but some do eat less. Perhaps the outside light they perceive is also important...

This may seem odd, but try to give food just 2 times a week and don't leave nothing there. Some of them start to eat more when they do not have food always at their disposal.

Please check the temps; she will also not eat if the overall temps are too high. Are you dusting with reptivite only? Does it contain calcium? Or is it just multivitamin?

They can sense the change of season with the shortened day light hours. And since she is a female, there is also a chance that she's ovulating and so, reduced her appetite.

I raised the temperature to 35º, as adviced, to see if she got her apetite back.
I'm only using reptitive to dust her food, but it has calcium and vitamines.

I see, thanks for the help :)

PS: She just shed a couple days ago and yesterday she pooped something really strange... :main_robin:

Is 36gr a normal weight for a, supposedly, one year and seven months old female leopard gecko? :main_huh:

I don't know for sure if that's her age, but that's what the seller said it was...

She's not thin, but I think she should be heavier... :main_yes:

got spots?

Mine is less than a year and weighs 55ish grams. And don't dust every feeding with that. I think that your leo isn't eating because you dust food with d3 too much. They can overdose and die from too many vitimans. Buy another one that is just calcium. One that I use is reptiive it has a leo on it. Make sure it says on the bottle without d3
