My Leo has been with me for over a year, and no health problems. Her flooring is slate, temps are fine, she eats, everything is up to par, except her swollen face. It looks like something may have bit her, and i am really worried. She can open her eye for a while, and then she closes it (as pictured).

I feed her super worms.

Her eyes are clear (both), and her nose is not runny. She is very active right now as well. I got her out and she climbed up my back and sat on my head.

It almost looks like a mosquito bite.

Thanks for your help everyone!

It looks like an abcess...they happeen sometimes in leopard geckos, especially around the eye/face area...if that's what it is, it needs to be lanced and drained by a vet.

I usually tell folks to try and soak the area with a small washcloth and warm water three times a day, until you can get an appointment with a veterinarian. This gecko will most likely need antibiotics and possibly even an anti-inflammitory...

They usually do quite well, as long as it's taken care of promptly.

Do you know what vets usually charge for that sort of thing? By the way, thank you for the quick reply. I will keep an eye on it and soak it.

Bbugs,

I just took one of my geckos to the vet Saturday to have this very thing done. Went in at 11:30 and was out by 1 with my gecko and medicine in hand. They let me sit in during the procedure, which was pretty cool. It was simple, the vet gave her a numbing shot in the abscess, and then took a scalpel and cut the area open and pulled the abscess out. Then he showed me how to clean the area and give her a shot.

All together the bill was $160. A little more than I was hoping to spend, but it is worth it. My vet wanted payment same day, but I know some other vets will work with you. You may be able to set up a payment plan, just talk with your local vet and see if they are flexible.

Unfortunately, you're probably not going to find a vet that has a payment plan...the days of payment plans are over. Veterinarians have all been screwed one too many times by some very untrustworthy clients. They disappear after their bill is due, checks end up bouncing that we hold to deposit post-date, and some will even leave the animal at the animal hospital and abandon it. Unfortunately, that ruined payment plans or any kind of "on your honor" payment system for the rest of everyone else. Now, we have to take payment up-front in full and before services are rendered. It's the same way in all the hospitals in the tri-county area here. Save your breath or phone calls, and just bring plenty of cash.

Thank you for your replies. I'm going to have to come up with some money somehow. I didn't realize how expensive that is!
