My grandmother has been sick for about 16 years now. With constant testing of her bone marrow (very painful testing), she's been a trouper and has kept fighting. We've almost lost her a few times. My dad just called me to inform me that she has been officially diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and is down to 65lbs. We've known for sometime this would happen as her blood counts have been borderline for the past 14 or so years.
I used to spend my summers on Staten Island with my grandma, grandpa & my aunt when I was a kid, and I cherish the memories of those good times when both of my grandparents were healthy and active. My grandfather has been dealing with a heart condition, sugar, and alzheimer for the past 6 years, and is not all there. He sleeps all the time, and even when he is up he is helpless or just plain mean. It's sad to watch both of them grow old, as they were always so lively. I'm afraid that this summer will be the last time I get to spend any time with them.
