Thank you so much for you help I've been very worried about it because I had a very bad experience with my first snake so I don't want the same with my lizard
your very welcome! I just want to make sure that you know how to care for your little guy so that you don't have bad experiences, because I know that feeling, and I don't like it either! just remember that i'm always open to questions, and so are many other dedicated members on this forum, so never be afraid to ask. and good luck with our little guy!:main_thumbsup:
Hi doggy and welcome! I was wondering if you could snap us a pic of your Leo's terrarium. I just curious to see what his new "world" looks like and to see if you have a good husbandry setup.
Michael,:main_robin: the first thing I would suggest is to replace the sand with either paper towels, Repti-Carpet, or tile. See sand causes compaction and this is where they ingest so much sand that they cannot pass the sand and it gets backed up in their system.
Leo's like to lick the surface that they are on quite frequently because they have the Jacobsons Organ and that is how they test the ground to pick up smells of food and the surroundings. So, every time your Leo "sniffs" he is taking in sand.
It's just not a good substrate at all.
I can only see one hide in your setup. The hide you have is great but your Leo needs a moist or humid hide that will allow him to shed. If he doesn't get the moisture to help him shed the when he does shed he will have pieces of old skin stuck to his toes and parts of his body that can cause problems pretty quick. A small Tupperware container with moist folded paper towels and a hole cut on top or on the side will do just fine. Just remember that the towels will dry out fast so you need to replace them often. You could get a repti-shelter or moist hide online that you can put moss into that will hold the moisture longer.
One other thing....and this is just my opinion, but I would be afraid of my Leo sticking himself on one of those cactuses. It looks pretty spiny in there! lol
Other than that I love the desert theme you have going there. :main_thumbsup:
Alright. I'll be getting the Repti-Carpet so I can keep the desert theme .Gonna put paper towel temporaly. I'll make the moist hide as soon as I can. I'll attempt to see if my parents will let me go to Pet co this week. Btw, The cactus aren't sharp at all lol
His new habitat. Not as pretty as before but it will do till I get the repticarpet. Was really annoying to get the sand out. There still is a small amount but it's nothing major. I'll make the moist hide as soon as my father let's me....
beautiful! it will look better once you get the carpet, but you might have just prevented your little guy from getting impacted, and not to mention the huge vet bills!
perfect! now shedding will be much easier for your little guy! btw, I would recommend an under tank heater, not overhead lamps. leopard geckos do not absorb heat through their backs, and need belly heat to properly digest food. the only time a lamp should be used is if the ambient (air) temperature drops below 65 in your house. other then that your set up will be great once you get the supplements, carpet, and hides set up, and not to mention that your set up is much nicer then any of mine! :main_laugh:
Thanks for all the help everyone . Im gonna stick with lamps because I like them better ( I use it for my ball python and corn snake and they eat very well). I will be getting all the stuff as soon as I have time.
