I have just completed my first shipping successfully. I had a little adventure with UPS that I thought might be helpful for other people. I went to the customer center (not the UPS store) a few days before "D-Day" to find out a good time to drop off the gecko. The workers immediately said "we don't accept live animals". They pointed to a poster on the wall that said there were restrictions on some items like alcohol, firearms and "live animals". Of course they were misinterpreting the poster that said there were restrictions, not that these items were restricted. When I got home I called the main UPS customer service number (800-PICKUPS). This service uses one of those artificial intelligence operators that are very hard to get around. I learned that if you want to talk to a real person, you say "agent" and they will send you to a live person. I spoke to someone and explained my problem. He took my info and told me he would call the supervisor at the Customer Service center and have her call me back within an hour. She called back in 45 minutes and told me that I should have no problem dropping off at the center and that if anyone gave me trouble I should have them call her (she gave me her name).
On Tues., I had no trouble.
There's nothing they can do to compel a UPS store to take a live animal, but they do have leverage over the customer service centers.
