My weird little gecko...

I need to vent a little :(

My little 'mack super snow' gecko Khione is very pretty... but not very normal. She's what you might call 'special', and rather high-maintenance. Many things are just harmless quirks but others are troubling and make things difficult.

More often than not she sleeps at night and is awake during the day. She doesn't really do anything, she just sits there all day with her eyes open despite many cozy caves to sleep in.

She does not poop in one corner. She has not pooped in the same place more than once since I got her. I guess she missed that memo.

She has abysmal eyesight and will only strike at things that I basically bump into her nose. And even then she often misses anyway. She can't eat crickets or other bugs with long legs because she doesn't close her eyes when she strikes and always gets poked. Fast-moving crickets and roaches are just too hard for her to catch anyway.

(The bright side is she is a great eater- though she can really only eat silkworms and other soft-bodied prey which are crazy expensive)

She has absolutely no grip or balance. It's like her arms and feet are numb. I know leos aren't great climbers, but the ones I've had before could at least walk across your arm and cling with their claws without losing their balance.

I started her out with a great tank full of things to clamber over (nothing too high) because my last one was a climbing maniac... but I had to take a bunch of it out because I was afraid she'd hurt herself. Despite this she's still managed to break one of her toes. Thankfully it doesn't seem to bother her.

She is allergic to something in paper towels that causes her eyes to crust shut, resulting in several fruitless vet visits until I figured out the problem. She's on tile now and doing better.

She doesn't know how to use her humid hide and constantly has shedding problems because of it. No matter how many times I put her in it, or even when I offer different kinds, she never knows to go in herself when she needs to. I've had to help her shed nearly every time because she often gets skin stuck on her toes and tail. She gets to a point where she just gives up.

She also hates me because I always have to restrain her to give her medicine or pull stuck shed off her feet. :( I try to be as gentle as I can, but of course she doesn't understand that I'm trying to help.

But jeez... One or two of these 'quirks' would just be quirks but all together it's frustrating. It's just not what I'm used to in a leo at all.

I like her despite it all, and I would NEVER get rid of her or anything. I'll hand feed her even when she's in her 20's if I have to, but it's really frustrating sometimes.

Does anyone else have geckos that need extra care like this?

I have my share: 2 fat tails who don't seem to want to eat on their own. The female may have a terminal condition although she's comfortable right now, but I have to hold them and hand feed them

--a pair of leos who need to be handed their crickets

--I also have a super snow that can't strike at her food effectively to save her life. I've finally gone over to superworms with her and she'll eat about 1 a day, but usually misses those too.

Poor things :( I had a gecko who got sick and stopped eating on her own. Force-feeding sucks for everyone involved.

And I think I heard the poor eyesight thing is common to super snows... It's just amazing how they can strike in a *totally different direction* sometimes. It's like the wires in their brains are crossed

I'm not really force feeding. It's more like assisted feeding. I'm not pulling her mouth open and stuffing the cricket in, or anything. It's more like gently pushing the cricket against her mouth till she opens it on her own and then she actually eats the cricket herself. BUt it is time consuming

LOL I thought I was the only one! I have 3 girls. One of which is BAD at actually getting her prey! She is getting better But, I have to put the worm in front of her with the tweezers and when she sees it, i put it on the ground and wiggle it.. and sometimes she gets it, somtimes not. LOL

I have a young leo that the vet thinks is blind that i got on 8th January that has never eaten by herself yet, i have to mush up some of everything add calcium & either syring feed her or put it on my finger for her to lick off, but the last few nights she hasn't wanted to eat at all, i really think i will loose her. So i would say you are lucky if your leo's eat with just a bit of help.
Marg.

PS, no offence ment be that.

Nah you're right, since she will eat on her own things aren't that bad.

I think mostly it's just annoying when I can do a lot of research into finding a good breeder but still can end up with a gecko with issues. It's like irony or something.

She's lucky she's so cute.

Yeah we have a SS that only eats food when I hand feed her. She refuses to eat out of a dish. We have about 80 leos now and it takes awhile to feed them all. It's just irritating that I have to hand feed her when we have all of the other geckos to feed. lol. But she's cute and special so I take time out to feed her and talk to her. :)

We have one that got a broken leg from a vet visit and she can't have anything very high in her tank because she tends to rebreak that leg. She gets daily doses of liquid calcium. We have a rescue that never sheds properly. He has lost 7 toes ( 6 before we got hi and one right after) oh and so far he has cost us $285 in tests for his "weight" isssue. I could have had an enigma for what his fat little rump cost and he's only a SHTCTB....but I love him, lol. We also have a tremper albino that seems to be blind as a little bat ( also a rescue). I don't really mind the extra work. I always tell myself that someday I may have to rely on the kindness of others if I find myself needing help in my old age. I can't see my kids babysitting their old mom, lol.

Hi...suggestions from HJ.
Try making her an outhouse. 6X6 tile from building material store. Dry Hide on top of it, somewhat warm tank area, not hot. At first you may have to MOVE some of her droppings to it for awhile.

Pull off Cricket parts, make a wiggly bug from it.

Sounds like maybe you need to get extra calcium
in her (liquid perhaps.. people type works..on finger..they lick it ..has some sugar in it which they like.

Cut a piece of PVC pipe to make a Shedding Tunnel. Mist the inside of it. Some will go inside and circle round and round rubbing against the sides. (worth a try)

Give meal worms a try feeding them orange peels
for a while before giving to her. Gut one, rub it on her nose.
Has worked for me

So you have to also handle her
when you are not doing these things for her.
Hold her to your body, lightly cupped hands.
GOOD LUCK......take care... HJ
