I've been trying to find plants native to the cresties' world. Apparently my web searching skill are lousy. Anyone know of any native plants that would work in my vivarium?
The book "Crested Geckos" by Adam Black has a section on page 46 called "Plants from the homeland". His list includes:
more common:
Bird's nest fern (Asplenium nidum)
Staghorn fern (Platycerium bifurcatum)
Dwarf tree fern (Blechnum gibbum)
less common:
Hoya limoniaca
Epipremnum pinnatum
I bought the last one (which is also called split leaf fern) from Black Jungle and Spencer loves it. Most afternoons, he is wrapped up in the big split leaves so you can barely see him.
So, I love New Caledonia for many reasons. My main reason is that it is one of the very few places in the world where more than 50% of the plants are endemic. Meaning that.. they only come from there and no where else. I believe the percentage of Endemic New Caledonian plants is in the neighborhood of 75%. The really nice thing for us, is the fact that when the French originally landed there. They brought A LOT of plants back to France with them. We now have some decendants of those plants all over the world. I don't have the information in front of me. But if you read some of Aaron Bauer papers on animals from New Caledonia. He actually mentions a lot of scientific names for native plants.
Tamara and I have always talked about starting up actually growing these plants and selling them.. The plants and their seeds are EXTREMELY hard to get. There are some places in europe that specialize in "uncommon" plants. But they are also extremeley expensive. Importing some of these species of plants actually requires cites documentation. Who doesn't like a challenge?
The only thing holding us back on this right now.. Is the fact that we rent a room in a house. We have no where to put them.
Thanks Aliza. I knew I had seen a list in a book somewhere. I don't own the book, but have flipped through it a few times. Now to research them by size I love spoiling my geckos
