As many of you know, I recently found a female blizzard prolapsed and bleeding to death: http://www.geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=20577

I just got back the results of the necropsy from my vet and wanted to share with all of you:

Marcia,

The results of the post mortem came back. There was some autolysis already in the body, but the pathologist was able to see that the oviduct did prolaspe out and was infected (large number of hertophiles (=white blood cells) ) in the tissue, most likely from an egg follicle. So basically an infection of the oviducts that caused them to prolaspe and rupture. Otherwise the gecko seemed to be very healthy with no evidence of parasitic infection, and all other organs looked normal.

Did he happen to tell you a possible reason for the infection? Seems like a freak situation. Especially if she was perfectly healthy other wise. Wierd. I wonder if she could of gotten some sort of bacteria into her system maybe through breeding but that even seems a bit farfetched. In no way should you put guilt on yourself. I wish i could type a magic word to fix the way you feel. I'm sorry for your loss. Keep faith Marcia keep faith.

So almost like developing sepsis, then?
Yes. Apparently, the egg follicle did not get completely reaborbed, and started to decay. It caused an infection which invaded the oviduct, and the oviduct somehow detached from the ovary and prolapsed, which cause my gecko to hemorrhage to death through her cloacal cavity. Had she not hemmorhaged, she would have most likely died as a result of the infection.

wow Marcia, this is really interesting news. I'm glad your vet was able to come to a conclusion with the necropsy. I'm wishing you the best with the rest of your season this year! :)

Well, at least you know no one could have foreseen or prevented this tragedy. Thanks for sharing this information, and again, so sorry for your loss. :(

We're so sorry that this happened to your girl Marcia, at least there is no more mystery as to why it happened. Bless your heart! Thanks for sharing Marcia.

Marcia,

I wanted to first tell you sorry for your loss. You did everything you could have. I also wanted to tell you how great of a Leopard Gecko keeper/breeder you are. Most people would have just taken the loss and not done anything about it. You on the other hand are taking the loss and learning along with helping us as a community learn about less common complications.

Thank you!
