I have a heat mat from ZooMed and i dont know if i should use A thermostat. my substrate will be the reptile carpet. and do you need to put something in the water before giving it to the leopard?

You probably will need a thermostat. I use plain tap water for my leopard geckos with no problems.

I agree that you'll probably need something to bring the temp of the heat mat down a bit as they tend to run hot. A rheostat or dimmer will reduce the amount of electricity going to the heat pad consistently. A Thermostat is a bit more expensive but will turn the heat pad on and off to keep it at the right temperature.
