Ive just hatched out my very first Raptor and after looking at his abdomin he appears to have and intestinal hernia, or possibly an un-ubsrorbed yolk sack.. I really wish i could upload pics for you guys but I dont have a digital camera I can use.. Is there abything that I can do like maybe try and push the hernia back in and hope the opening seals itself up! Or is it just a waiting game to see if it is actually the umbilical cord and will it will fall of by itself?

Also why does this happen?

Cheers

Keep it warm and on paper towels. If it's a yolk sac it will fall off and there will be maybe a pin-sized hole in the abdomen which will close up. If it's an abdominal hernia I don't think there's much you can do except put it down (once you're sure that's what it is) before it dies on its own. I had one like that last year and when I took it to the vet to have it put down they decided they'd try to put everything back in and close it up. It died within 24 hours. I think by the time you can figure out what it is the damage has been done from the intestines being in a non-sterile environment. I think it just happens sometimes. I've had a small percentage of mild abnormalities, all different, from different pairings in the same incubator with babies that have been fine.

I would say you likely have a unobsorbed yolk sac which will fall of shortly. The first time I hatched one like that I was very worried too, but nothing to worry about too much.

Thanks very much replys. I had a better look last night and it does look like it is his intestines that is exposed, but I could be wrong. He is still very active and it doesnt seem to be fazing him at all.. Just need to keep my fingers crossed I guess..

Well he is still going strong. The Hernia appears to have shrunk leading me to believe that it is starting to revert back inside his abdomin.. It really still doesnt look like the remnants of his egg sack.. Hes a little fighter..

UPDATE!!
I had a wee look in his moist tub last night and to my surprise he has shed ate his skin and passed it out. HJe has also been urating round the tub as well so I can only assume his bowl and intestines arent badly damaged. He still appears to have the hernia so im a bit confused how he has made such great progress..

Can you get images? I have never seen that before and would like to if possible.

I am happy he/she is doing good and I sure hope for further progress.

This isnt a very good pic. He looked away just as I took it. He quite stressesd out so i didnt want to bother him any more. I will try and get some better ones over the next couple of days.. You can just see the hernia hanging down between his legs..

I hatched one with a "unobsorbed yolk sac"? that looked just like that. After a few days(4-5) it was gone. I may be mistaken due to shooting angle though.

Well my little guy is till going strong. Its been 8 days since he hatched.. The thing that I thought was a hernia has now completly vanished. I think it was just an unubsorbed yolk sac.. He is going though a really bad shed now tho. He has managed to get the skin of his head but cant get the rest of. i have tried but he is just to damn small.. Any tips on removing a shed of such a small gecko?

Ill get some updated pics of him ASAP...

One thing I've found that really helps my hatchlings is to mist the tub they are in. I have yet to have a bad shed when misting... knock on wood. When I did not mist, I would get bad sheds. When I would see the bad shed, I would mist the cage, let the humidity build and give the gecko a few hours to him/herself. If that did not work, I'd handle the gecko and treat it like an adult going through a bad shed, using a moist Q-Tip to get the shed off.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice kotsay. I do provide small sweat boxes for all of my geckos and he is in a small tub, quite low to his back to add more security and this is always moist. He appears to have shed the skin from his head but its the rest of the body thats concerning me now. He is so delicate and very small for a hatchling (not the smallest ive had tho) I fear I wil do him some damage trying to remove it.
Im also concerned about getting him to eat as he should have eat the first shed to pass out his first bowl movement therefore stimulating his appetite..

Hers is the little guy... Notice the bad shed on his back and the remainder of his liquid lunch :main_no:
Will waiting for the next shed help remove the first one?

I am having real difficulty removing the skin without causing him discomfert.. I just cant seem to find a tear on the surface so I can pull it of. He is in a little sweat box where the humidty is fairly high.. What would happen if i couldnt get it of?

I wont pretend to have the answer, but I am sure a PM or call to Marcia will get you on the right track. I have never had a real bad shed like that on a gecko and the few stuck sheds on the feet I always remove with a warm soak and a Q-tip to gently remove it.

Get some unscented aloe vera gel and put it on the gecko's bad shed areas a couple time a day. It may not all come off until it's next shed, but it will help keep the skin moist and more pliable until then. Really, the only time you need to worry about residual skin is on the eyelids, feet, and tail where it could cut off the circulation.

(... cute little baby!)

Thank you Marcia & paulnj.:main_thumbsup: I managed to get some unscented aloe vera gel and applied it to the worst areas including his feet and tail. Hopefully that will do the trick..

Ill let you know how he goes. I hope I dont loose him cause he is so friendly and such a wee character..:)
