ok so my gecko recently had a siezure and i got some really good tips from you all on the site, but just to get some more ideas i went to the reptile store when i got him and asked them about it. the reptile guy said that it may be caused by to much or to little calcium. he said he dosnt dust the crickets he gives his geckos he just leaves a dish of calcium out. he says the geckos will use it like a salt like and like the calcium when they need it and i dont have to dust his crickets that way. now is this true?

yea i leave the calcium in a lil bowl or lid for them, the lick it as they need it, but sometimes they dont, if you notice this, or notice there bones looking a lil shaky, or their jaw looking a lil weak, dust your food, but if they look healthy just leaving the calcium in their should be enough

There seems to be much debate about this in the forum. To this point I have heard from reputable breeders and keepers:
--only supplement once a month so they don't overdose on calcium
--dust feeders at every feeding
--leave a bowl of calcium without D3 in the cage and they'll take what they want
--don't leave a bowl of calcium in the cage because they'll overdose on it

I think the best thing to do at this point is to choose something and see how it works. Currently I have decided to dust my feeders (fed 2-3 times weekly) with Repashy's calcium plus and to leave the bowl of calcium out of the cage. I'll see how things go this season. I've been doing this since the late fall and everyone seems to be doing well. We'll see how my breeding season compares to last season.

so when you say dust once a month is that one week a month or one feeding a month? im worried i over dosed him before and i am also worried that he isnt licking his dish. that once a month thing sounds like something to try tho.

I hve decided not to go with the "once a month" plan, but if you search the forums, at least one experienced keeper (Gregg, I think) does it that way and says it works for him. He may be able to give you more info,.
