I don't know how these were done, but I like to cut part of the middle off, and hotflue screen in place of the hole, as well as drill holes all the way around the rim of the tub.

This is what I do in my tubs as well. It helps out a lot when using paper towels as bedding. Mine always turned into a swamp before I added the screen.
