one of my geckos (not sure which, they're all the same kind anyways) laid some eggs about a week or 2 ago, and i candled them just before i put them in the incubator, and the were yellow. i was dissapointed, but i decided to keep them anyways. now they're orangeish-red. any hope? i'm afraid to handle them too much, so i haven't really candled them recently, maybe i should...

well i don't think you can tell until like 1-3 weeks by candling. They are probably fertile..

YES they are fertile!! Thank goodness you kept them! Although there is no need to remove the eggs when doing this.. You can simply take the top off of your incubator, open your egg-container, and candle the eggs right there.

You can confirm fertile or infertile by the second or third day (although the amount of pink that you see won't be much). At about day 4 or 5, you can start seeing veins in the egg. At a couple of weeks, they glow red because there's hundreds of veins now while the embryo is developing. Eventually you won't be able to see anything but a dark shadow inside of the egg as it gets closer to hatching. On the very first day, however, all eggs glow yellow.

thanks guys. i didn't know all eggs glowed yellow on the first day. i'm still a little nervous because they're pretty soft like infertile eggs. all my fertile ones were a lot firmer.

We were just too excited about our eggs and so we candled them on the first day...they all glowed yellow, but all had firm shells and looked good. The next day, we saw a little tiny pink spot in one area of the egg, and the "pinkness" grew from there.

Not sure why the shell is softer, though. Maybe someone else can enlighten us both.

here is a quote from another post (titled "some problems"), but is relevant here:

I have had eggs go 7-8 weeks then start deflating and when I opened them up there was nothing in there. I have also had a few eggs start to go bad after 6-7 weeks and when it was clear the egg was no good I opened it up and there was a dead baby. It could be either of these situations or something else with humidity.
