New geckos and now eggs, help :)

Newbie here and still learning but... we were given/rescued two leopard geckos about 2 weeks ago. The guy we got them from said one was about 2 yrs. old and the other about 1 1/2. They had been in the same tank their whole lives and he was sure they were males.

Well long story short one of them is obviously not. This morning we found 2 eggs outside their warm hide. We kept them in the same tank as there seemed to be no problems with them fighting. Now I'm gonna have to separate them but that's another story.

What do I do with the eggs? For now I've put them in a small container with moist moss and placed that in their moist hide. Will it be worth my time to try and incubate these eggs or because of the conditions will they most likely not be fertile?

I'm going to continue to read the forums and figure this thing out but thought I'd throw this out there for any help. Thanks in advance :)

do you know the morpfs of the 2 leopard geckos you have, yes I would incubate the eggs but you will need to get an incubator for the eggs and you will need to read up on breeding, genetics, incubating, babies and everything there is to know about leopard geckos, the eggs you have so far might not make it but you should get everything and learn about everything I just told you so that you will be prepared for the next eggs which could be as early as 2 weeks out.pm me if you have any other questions.

No idea on the morphs. Gonna have to go read up on that now :) Getting them was totally spur of the moment and I wasn't prepared at all. But I knew I could raise them in better conditions than they were in. I've got no problem doing the work, just want to do it right.

CHeck the breeding section because someone asked exactly the same question about 2 days ago and I answered it in some detail.

Thanks Aliza. I found your posts in the incubation section but that's all I can find about this. Is there another breeding section besides this one? I now have an incubator and gonna give this a go. Got help from the local animal house, they are pretty good to work with too I'm finding out.

The two eggs are stuck together too and I'm not sure how that is going to effect things. I'm not going to separate them so we'll see.

well srry to disagree you do not need a incubator go buy a heat pad and a lizard tote sit tote on top of heat mat and make temp 85 degrees

I see you are still new to the forum and I also see your still fairly young as well. So I will try to be nice about this. Incubators are very important when breeding leopard geckos or any reptile for a few reasons. You can't get a stable temp by using tote with a heat pad under it, so your clutches will not hatch with a good % and you are also asking for trouble with unstable temps. Unstable incubation temps cause alot of deform body parts. I believe you should do alittle more research before advising someone on this or any other issue. Its good you want to be apart of the community but first do your homework before giving out bad advise.

Well the incubator was set up and the eggs went in last night. Now we wait I guess. I'm still looking for ways to tell if an egg is good or not. Gotta keep reading.

Setting up my second tank now for the female. Laybox with moss for her next clutch, etc. This is more work than I was thinking I would have to do when I got them but fun and very informative :)

If the eggs are firm, white, and in general 'looks good', then they're probably fertile. You were lucky to catch the clutch in time! When I first started I had females rejecting their egg laying chambers until I figured things out, and it was a real struggle to get to the eggs before they dessicated.

Good luck and if you have any questions, you're at the right place! I think there are already excellent guides on incubating eggs in this forum, so you could do a search to find the relevant threads.

Checked on the eggs yesterday and they had went bad. Bummer. Maybe the next go round will be better.

Sorry to hear that.... but on a more positive note... at least next time you will know what to do and you already have everything to do it.

That's what I'm thinking and telling the kids. They were bummed too.

Well she's on her way to a second clutch. Starting to fatten up and can see what I believe are the outlines of eggs in her belly. I should be a bit more prepared this time I hope :)
