We picked up two normal leo geckos yesterday. They are both adults and at a very healthy weight with extremely plump tails. The woman had owned them for about a year and didn't know the sexes of them. I checked them and it turned out she had a male and a female. She has never seen any eggs or any signs of them mating. I am guessing it is due to improper habitat. They both have stuck shed on their toes. The male is actually missing the tips of 4 or 5 toes. I gave them a little soak is some lukewarm water in the sink last night, but it hasn't fallen off yet. They were also on orange repit sand and their tummies are stained from it. They were housed in a 20 long with an UTH and a huge water dish that had a bubbler in it, which I believe caused a lot of humidity. They obviously eat and they did a little for me yesterday, but I don't believe they were using calcium dust and were fed exclusively crickets. Also they smoked in the house and all of their stuff smells like ciggerettes. I put them in a spare 20 long that I have and I am going to soak and thoroughly clean their decor. They are beaufitul little normals with great patterns. I really want to get them cleaned up and healtheir. I don't know if I'll ever get them to reproduce, what do ya'll think? I don't really have any other questions, just wanted to share!

I don't think stuck shed is a reproducing problem. Just give em some rest, good food and some hybernation time or at least a time apart. I bet the male will mate her as soon as you put them together again after a period of 'alone time'.

Greets,

I know that stuck shed wouldn't cause reproductive problems. It's more inhaling constant smoke, no calcium for forming eggs, too much humidity, ect. As easily as they mate and reproduce, geckos of this size should have already mated or she at least should have laid some eggs at some point. They weigh about 65 grams a piece and I have a female that started laying infertile eggs at 42 grams. It just seemed odd to me is all...

If the conditions weren't right then it's very possible that either the female didn't ovulate or that she was re-absorbing the eggs. I'm sure they'll be happy to be in a new, loving home!

It's great you are here on GeckoForums to help you with these geckos! I would not be concerned with breeding them at this time, until you can get their environmental needs met. Once they are well-established, eating and shedding well, I don't see any reason why you could not breed them in the future.

I'm not completely concerned with breeding, but that is one of the many reason why I bought them. They seem to be doing much better now. They have spent about 90% of their time in the humid hide and a lot of the stuck shed has come off aside from a couple toes. I think she feed them 24 crickets like once a week because they haven't eaten anything yet. I was told they ate last Sunday. Anyway thanks for the encouragement so far! I will give them plenty of time to adjust and make sure they are healthy before I even attempt to breed them, or maybe they will do it on their own!
