Ok so the girl i got a couple days ago laid her eggs today. I was at work but my friend saw her do it a couple hours ago she also said the eggs seemed soft. Will they firm up or is that a sign they are infertile ?

Im just home and went to take the eggs but she is still in there with them and does not seem inclined to move. She has covered the eggs over and is laying on them. Should i just go in and take them or wait and see if she will move soon ?

Also as i had not planned on breeding until next year if even my incubator has not arrived yet ( Ordered it when i got her but it was late so order only really went in yestarday) Will the eggs do ok in a container in the viv until it gets here ?

Thanks

When eggs are first laid, they are soft and wet, as they dry a bit, they firm up. If you want to try to incubate them, they need to be at a consistent temperature. Varying temps can cause abnormal babies. Check out the incubation threads on this forum. If you aren't ready to deal with eggs just yet, there's nothing wrong with sticking them in the freezer. She will likely lay again in 2-3 weeks, thus giving you time to prepare for another clutch.

IDK how well it would work to try to keep an egg container in with the mom. Again, a temp variation can be an issue, as well as her disturbing even a closed container which would drown the babies.

Good luck :)

Yea i got the eggs off her and they are firm now. I had a look through some of them briefly whan i was think =ing about breeding next year and thats what made me ask about the chances in the viv i think someone said they didnt use an incubator and just got a mix of males and females but if there is a chance they will have deformitly or other health issues maybe it would be better to not try with these ones just thought as it takes so much out of them that i would try it but now that i am being advised against it maybe better to not

Here are the eggs and my new slimmer girl

Those eggs look good! If your incubator arrives tomorrow or the day after, there's no need to throw them away if your cage air temp is about 80F (which it most likely will be if you heat your house in winter). If it's colder, just put a red light slightly over it to heat the air temps up a little. Just cover the tupperware with a lid, because otherwise they'll dry out. I've had a power failure for a day or two, and all eggs survived in a makeshift incubator (meaning handwarmers in a styrofoam box), and I never had any malformations of limbs. Try your luck... if they don't make it, most likely the eggs will rot in a few days. Otherwise, you'll have two nice babies. Mother nature doesn't provide exactly the same degree constantly, either. I wonder if those wild geckos all die or are born deformed and get eaten then.

The one thing i didnt know until it was posted is that the female when she lays her eggs rolls them with her feet and that firms them up.

Learn something new every day :D Thanks for sharing.

Also just thought id update and let everyone know i went with fl_orchidslave and decided not to try to incubate these ones as i was not prepared enough and would like my first hatches to have the best poss chances of being healthy.

Thanks for the input though LZRDGRL but as i said i think i want to do everything i can to be sure my first hatchlings are a happy time and not deformed or ill. Figure if i have all my things straight there is less of a chance of things going wrong. Kinda sucks not doing anything with them because i know it takes so much out of the female. I'll just have to suck it up and make sure my girl gets everything she needs to keep healthy through it.
