Hi.....My name is Rhonda and I'm gecko stupid!!! So, I have 2 (perhaps) stupid questions!

Firstly, what does it mean when a gecko acts like it's trying to climb the walls of it's tank? AND....do geckos really like to be *handled*??!?? :main_huh:

Thanks!!!

If you could put a gecko in a tank that's a mile long, it will probably at some point trek to the end and try to get out!. Mealworms do the same thing with edges too, I noticed. Some geckos like being handled and some don't. If you gradually get yours used to being handled, hopefully it will turn into one that likes it.

Welcome.

If your gecko is always trying to climb the side, check your temps, he may be too hot.

I have several that love to try and climb up the backs of their tanks. I swear they think the rocks on the background is real, lol. Handling seems to depend on the gecko. We have some that seem to like it, some tolerate it and some seem to just hate it. Welcome to the forum.

Some leos just like to climb and it depends on the temperment on whether they like to be handled or not. My leo doesnt really like to be handled, but I try to handle him a few mins a day so he gets used to it. Good luck

I read the rules, I saw the thread about "search" so I "searched myself" so as to be contained -

My tank is approx. 24 x 12. Where should I have my heat source forcused?

Danka!! :)

Put it on one side so you have a warm side and a cool side.

As far as handling my geckos goes, I never really handle them. I may pick them up gently and place them in my hand or on my arm but I never grasp them. Geckos do not like to be restrained as does any animal. It causes them stress and I try to make them as least stressed as possible. Another thing I do is either sit on the couch or on the floor when they are exploring. Geckos can get flighty and you dont want them jumping from high places. They are not cuddly animals. I let the gecko do what it wants not what I want it to do.:):):):):)

Newton, my leo doesn't like to be handled exactly, but she does seem to enjoy chilling out on my shoulder. I never really handled her until my power went out, and i was trying to let her use me for heat. now she isn't afraid to sit on me. She usually sits on my arm o shoulder while i am watching Jeopardy! every night

Ok, that's where my heat lamp had been placed. He's got a cool spot!

Geckos need day and night, right? At night I turn off the bright heat lamp and turn on another with a red bulb. I also have a heated rock which is where I find him hangin' out every morning. Thought I read somewhere here that the rocks aren't good but it seems to be working for me.

I've never held him. But he lets me reach in and stroke the top of his head. :)

Please be careful with the hot rock. They have a history of becoming way too hot and burning the underbellies of lizards/snakes. You'd be much better of getting an under tank heater (UTH), heat tape, or something similar.

In my apartment with a roomie.
I agree that the heat rock is a bad idea....While shadowing at an animal clinic that specialized in exotics and herps, I saw maybe 4 cases a week of contact burns from heat rocks or other plug-in devises that were used instead of an overhead ceramic or heat lamp....I would strongly suggest a UTH and some sort of overhead if your ambient temp is still a bit cold.
