You've probably already seen me around the forums, but this is my introduction. As a little kid, my brother used to always have geckos. All the same pattern and from our local P**c*. Now, I have done a lot of research, but decided to get a gecko from the LPS for two reasons. First, they were in horrible condition. Sleeping on top of each other, no heat, sand substrate. Some had no tails and had exuvium (shedding) all over them. Second, all those online stores above charge a ton for geckos! Seriously, $70 for a 15g baby with $50 shipping!? Maybe when I have the money, but I wouldn't want to accidentally screw up and kill an expensive, rare gecko by accident. Well, here I am.

Welcome to GF. There are some other choices besides getting a gecko from the LPS that's not in great shape or paying a ton through online stores. Here are some other choices:
--check out the classifieds here. Many of the geckos (including mine, for instance) are under $50 or even under $40.
--find out if there are breeders on this forum who live near you. That will save you shipping
--see if there is a local reptile show near you. THen you can see what you're getting and do some comparison shopping.
--post something in the "wanted" section here including what you want, where you live and how much you'd like to pay

shipping costs so much because its a live animal, you know just makes sense. Your paying for the extra careful and extra quick and safe delivery of the animal.
But as mentoned by Aliza there alternatives.

Well, now that I know the basics, it's likely that I will shoot higher than a LPS.

Welcome to the forums. Breeders are the way to go, for any animal. I'm about 50/50 on getting sick animals from LPS. Your mileage may vary... but a sick animal will cost you more in the long run.
