I am possibly picking up a new gecko this weekend at a show in Des Moines. I feel more comfortable buying from a breeder than a pet store. This purchase brings up a couple questions...

I am new to leo's. What size is too small? I assume that many of the geckos offered will be young.

What should I plan on to use to bring the little ones home?

Any other important items/tips I need to know?

Thanks for the responses!

Breeders wont sell you any that are "too small" and they'll usually give you the cup they're displayed in at the show.

Do you have a tank already set up?

Most breeders won't sell geckos that are too small. Beware of vendors with a tub of lots of tiny geckos for $10 each. Most breeders sell geckos starting at about 15 grams (they are born weighing 2-4 grams) or 6 weeks. I have sometimes sold a younger one that was active and eating well because it was showtime and the gecko was doing really well though a bit smaller/younger than usual. A breeder should be able to tell you when the gecko was hatched.

The first year is pretty critical to development and a long healthy life. With bone growth being important so as it grows they won't deform. So vitamin and calcium supplement are key. I use 2 types of calcium ( with and without d3) having a small dish in the tank at all times with the non d3 and dusting crickets once a week or so with the powder containing d3. (dusting you basically put a small amount of powder in the bag with the crickets then "shake and bake" them and dump them in the tank). Variety in food is good but be careful some worms are very fattening. Butter and wax worms from what I've been told so only use them kind of like a treat. Meal worms are good and I usually feed them a couple each every few days alternating which day with a dusting of vitamin powder. When they are full grown, a Goliath worm one in a while is good but only feed them one every dew weeks or so, a few people have told me they have the nitrional value of a dozen crickets or so in one worm.
If anyone has any insight or I got something slightly off feel free to right it lol these are techniques I've been using for years and work for me

Hello, Jim! Where in Des Moines? My gf goes to medical school there.

If I were you, I would get one that is older and more calm. For me, that was the best way to go. Now, after raising babies, I have a lot more confidence and gained experience with leos.
