So ive had my leopard gecko for a week now, and im just wondering if anyone could help me get him to trust me? When i pick him up he doesnt hiss, he just sits calmy in my hand. I put him down and he sits for a little bit, then slowly walks around exploring. But when i stroke him on his back, he darts away for 2-3 steps, then sits there. I do it again and he runs for 2-3 steps then sits there. He sort of trusts me i guess, but since this is my first leo i dont really have any experience to get him to being used to being handled, any help?

Just give him time, he'll get used to you eventually. My boys used to do that all the time but now they don't mind being touched while they're down walking around.

Talk about calcium addict...
I came in this morning to find Loki passed out in the open, with the calcium dish flipped upside down and everywhere. lol. Must've been quite the adventure.

That's really good that he sits in your hand calmly and lets you pick him up without squirming. I've had Dex for almost five months now and he still gets squirmy when I pick him up, once he's up though he's pretty calm.

Well, he does squirm (not that much), but he does when hes annoyed and wants to go back and be left alone in his cage. Hes pretty calm until someone touches him.

Stroking him on the back is not a good idea. He can't see what you are doing and he is scared. Many say to use the palm of your hand, but my experience is to just place your hand flat on the cage bottom and let them come to you. They will walk over your hand a few times and then you can slowly lift them up while they are on the back of your hand. Then as they walk around on the back of your hand, transfer them using the "gecko escalator" method, transferring them from the back of one hand to the next, letting them walk up your arm, transferring them back to your hand, and so on. Eventually they know you will not hurt them and will get very tame. Keep away loud noises, screaming children, etc. while doing this taming process and talk in a calm soothing voice, almost a whisper. Always end the session on a good note when placing them back into the cage. In a week or two of this you should have a very tame leo.

hmm.. no.1.. he is still new 2 your environment.. may b in stress / shock / curious conditions. however, leos need some time to settle in a new environment, especially 2 a new owner..

try not to get too excited & handle him too much now.. it takes times to generate trust between him & u.... to your touch, to your smell/scent, to your voice, your face & your body temperature & the approach / the way you carry/ handle him..

their sensibility of hearing, smelling & taste are good! :D

give him more time. Plus he may not like to be touched on the back. Some geckos do (my Athena arches up into my finger when I pet her that way), others don't. Just keep working with him and stay calm.
