New mom to be rambling

so I've held off as long as I could on posting repeat questions, read as much as I could here & other forums and I just can't get rid of being nervous. My first gecko is being shipped today and I've never had an animal shipped to me personally before. SO I sit here at work and wonder if everything is really ready. :main_laugh: Husband is tired of me callin today making last minute checks that really could wait till I got home. :anxious: :main_rolleyes: :main_laugh:

The cage is set, temps are 92 & 80. 3 hides, moist has moss. Tile flooring. Will cover 3 sides of the tank tonight to help with adjustment period.

Question is: Should I leave a few superworms in there for him when he arrives? Or wait a day or 2?

He turns a year old on June 25 and his breeder feeds him supers, so I know he can handle those. I know not to leave crickets runnin loose in a cage. We have a beardie too, but he was hand picked, cash & carry, and nuthin seems to phase that beardie. *lol* So there wasn't really an "adjustment period" with the beardie per say.

My son may get his own Leo at a Rep Show next week and he's just :main_rolleyes: at me with mine arriving tomorrow. I think it's a little different stress between cash & carry guys and shipped guys.

Or am I just rambling? :main_laugh:

sounds like you have everything covered. I don't think it hurts to try to feed the first day. They'll either feel ok to eat or not. Mine always ate the day after being shipped. Good luck and have fun!

Heather, you might be rambling but you sure
seem ready to me.
I think all will go well for you.

Although,after reading, I have become
stressed and can not eat my dinner. LOL

Take care. All the best.

I usually dont offer anything when they first arrive. I will definitely the next day but I think shipping is so stressful on the animal that they need time to just relax, adjust, warm up, whatever...
Leos can go a while(I use this term loosely) without food, especially one that old that not feeding it for a day would be fine.

I think your rant is pretty funny and wish you the best of luck. Trust me you are getting more worked up then necessary and it will be fine. The gecko is not going to die if you mess one thing up or make one mistake.
All geckos are different and react differently. Any guidelines that you are given may not be necessary for all or even the best thing for your gecko. Play it by ear, pay attention to how your gecko reacts to you, its new environment and see if you can compensate accordingly. What do I mean... well if your gecko seems overly jumpy to rapid movements then try to make slower movements(this is just an example that you would do anyways but I am using it to help explain what I mean).

Thanks Everyone, :) I know it's just nerves, maybe because a gecko is so small compared to the monkeys we ship from work. You can't really loose our guys and they're shipped by companies that only ship for research anyways. Once in a blue moon do we fly them..an then we do worry. *lol* Never lost a monkey in transit either. :main_thumbsup:

Thanks again for your advice/help. I'll post pics in a few days. :)

One of the beautiful things about reptiles is their hardiness, at ones like leos. I wouldn't stress too much, it looks like you have your bases covered and are ready. But it's better to stress too much than not to care at all.

Gecko made it from Georgia to Texas alive and well. :main_thumbsup:

I've been stuck at work all day so Husband & daughter thought it would be cute to see just how many times I'd call every hour to see if he'd gotten there. Round 2pm when I called home upset & mad, hubby admitted to him being there the whole time.:main_thumbsdown: So I've got to ditch the bad vibes outside the house at them then have good vibes when I peek under the towels coverin the cage to look at our new family member.

No more leavin hubby & daughter in charge of things. :main_no:

Aw, how cruel! I actually got my first gecko shipped to me today. I swear I was looking out the window every 5 minutes waiting for the UPS truck! She arrived safe and sound from CA to NH (and has been chilling in my desk all day because I had to have her shipped to my work).

I'm the same as you...going over everything 100 times, making sure everything is great, etc. Can't wait to see pics of your new addition!

HJ...current husband is #3..an I'm just not givin in to the whole mess of div again..I'll just make his life more hell after the kids are gone. :D :main_laugh:

If he'd be in touch with the breeder then yeah it woulda been really funny cause then she'd know the gecko was fine an no one would be attackin UPS. Heck I was gigglin at myself for callin every hour till 1:30 an no gecko. :)

But anywho, the lil guy slept the whole day with a lil movement durin the night. Found him in the cool hide tween 1 & 2am but then back in the hot at 6am today. :main_thumbsup: Can imagine what these animals go thru in shipping. :main_huh: I hate flyin in planes..so it's gotta be stressful for 24hrs at least.

Sleepin gecko..happy mom. :D

Sounds like something my husband would do to me. LOL. im glad the new addition is safe... he should eat for you soon. some eat straight from the box and others it can take a week or 2. Good luck welcome to the very addicting hobby of geckos.

Day 2..he hasn't moved much out of the warm hide. He's been seen in different positions but the worms are still in there after a few hours (9am - 12pm & 10pm - 3am roughly) so we remove them and offer again. I'll not worry over the not eating for a while, he's almost a year old and looks good. :main_thumbsup:

He does open his eyes when we're staring at him, so he's at least acknowledging we're there. *lol*
