My name is Tyler, I recently adopted a young (Male?) Gargoyle from a nice girl in Massachusetts. I just traveled about an Hour and a half with him in a Sterilite container and damp towel. I handled him some when I got home and fed him a little Repashy Super Food. I removed his old substrate and moss from the vivarium I received. I washed it thoroughly with tap water(Our tap water is very low chlorine and fluoride, little high on iron) Then I laid down new coconut substrate and shagsum moss, also added in his plastic plants and branch. I have a few questions and am always welcoming recommendations.

Can I use Fiji water for misting?

Should I redo his substrate and soak it in Fiji water?

Should I let him stay in quarantine for longer than a day before I handle him again?

There is a small reddish bump on his upper tail A bit smaller than the size of a Bic pen ball point. What could this be?

Any other tips for making him as comfortable in his new home?

,Tyler

Well I ended up getting some Fiji water today and a small sprayer. I am keeping the lower level around 60% humidity and the top around 40%.

I don't want to have to spray 5 times a day so I am thinking of upgrading to an auto misting system and a larger vivarium. I am also doing research as to what materials i should use in his new habitat. I plan to mimic the Island of New Caledonia as accurately as possible.

He also seems to be settling in nicely, moving around and changing his hang out spots. I made some really good hides with the plastic branches and some shagsum moss that he seems to like.

Welcome to GF from another New Englander! I keep and breed gargoyles. I use regular tap water filtered through a Britta so it doesn't leave stains on the glass. I find it sufficient to mist once every evening. You can always put some plexiglass on top of the screen top to keep it more humid. I have a coco fiber substrate (with drainage) and planted tanks.

I'd recommend you give him a few days to acclimate before handling. I have no idea what the mark near the tail you mention is. Keep an eye on it and see if it changes.

Enjoy him.

I Found out the bumps are just his male sex organs or birth marks. There are two identical dots on both sides just where the tail begins.

He is becoming very comfortable being handled and likes to jump, a lot. Here is a picture and video.

I've never been a fan of cresteds, but the gargoyles interest me. Do they require room temps as the cresteds do?

From my understanding, They're native habitat of New Caledonia has a climate ranging from mid 80's during the day to low 60's at night. The humidity ranges from almost 100% in the day to 40% at night. I am monitoring his climate closely and changing it as needed based on his mood and behavior.

Today while handling him, I fed him some super food out of my hand. he seemed very comfortable and ate quite a bit. This was the first time he ate in 3 days.
