Hello everyone
I have been reading up on leopard geckos for a few months now but I am still a little scared to take the first step in obtaining my first morphs. Can anyone provide some good tips for starting with my first pair? Theres so many cool morphs that I cant help but want them all but realistically i know is should only start with a handful of leopards. What would be a good number to start with? should i also buy normals in addition to the morphs that i pick out? Hopefully some kind soul out there would be willing to help me take my first step into a hobby that so many here seem to enjoy so much.

Well first off what you want and what other would want could be very different. Look over and research until you find what morph you want to keep. I would goto www.leopardgeckowiki.com and look over all the morphs and that will give you a good base knowledge of the different kinds. Then I would make my decision. I would start with one gecko in the beginning and would probably start out with something on the lower end of the scale in regards to cost and morph. If you feel comfortable with everything a gecko needs then feel free to get what you want.

Make sure that you have all the necessary supplies that is needed to keep a leoprd gecko. Tank, heat mat, hides, dished, calcium, feeder dust, and etc.

The most important thing to do is research, research, and more research. You can never do too much and you will always learn something new everyday.

I hope this helps you out a little! :main_thumbsup:

+1 on what Justin said.

If i was just beginning with leos I would get a pair of basic morphs like Tangerine, Jungle, Albino they are very easy to find and cost is relatively low for them most of the time.

I would not start breeding right away because if you get too many babies and you have no where to keep them and not the means to take care of them then your in trouble and you have to find a outlet to get rid of them before they need to be sold.

every leo keeper learns new things everyday no one knows everything. I would suggest buying a few books on leos that way you have some decent info on hand at all times even when the internet may not be available to you.

I dont know where you are located but there are many breeders all over the US and many other countries. I dont know if you want to buy locally or online but research different breeders and see their prices and see what you like.

i wish you good luck and welcome to the hobby i warn you though keeping of any geckos is very addicting once you buy one you buy another and another and etc lol. There is no cure for being addicted to geckos. I myself am infected with it lol

I agree with the above. It's a lot of fun and you will most certainly become addicted!!

Research is key, Knowledge is power.

I would also suggest to start out S L O W L Y. It's very easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new hobby. However, if you accumulate too many too quickly, it can become overwhelming. I would suggest getting 2 or 3 to start off with. Keep them for a while and learn everything you can. Become an expert.

Then - when you feel comfortable, add another. Evaluate your capacity: time, energy, and money. Be sure to experience the hobby within your means. The animals come first.

Have fun with it and enjoy!!
