Firstly just wanted to say hi to you all i've recently posted in the introduction thread as I joined today.

As my introduction says I will be getting my 1st Reptile on Saturday and I have looked through a lot of information in regards to substrate. I have heard mixed reviews about everything that I've looked into. I spoke with my local store who breads Leopard Geckos, and Bearded Dragons and he has kept his on sand for a while as he had issues with the reptile carpet before. He has mentioned impaction and he says that the sand that he uses is very fine sand and he has not had a problem with it at all.

The tank that I am getting is a 20 long and he is going to build it and do the electrics so in terms of doing that I'm happy that I cannot make any mistakes. I went into the pet stores around us and they all seemed to be in really small tanks with very little space. I have a few ideas about the way that I want things to look but being new to the whole reptile world I think it will be a work in progress.

Although I have registered using the Name GamingNGeckos my name is infact Iain and I'm really glad that i've found a forum which appears to have a lot of knowledgeable people on it and very nice looking geckos.

Was wondering what advice people would give to a newbie, I know the situation with the substrate is likely to cause mixed reviews I can only say that I will of course see how things go and change it if I feel it is needed.

Welcome to GF. As you may be finding out, there is no single way to do things and different things work for different people. If you're getting a baby gecko, though, there is pretty much agreement that sand is not appropriate for them. My best advice is to pick something and see how it goes. Personally, my quibble with repti-carpet (which I've used) is that their teeth and nails tend to get caught in it and it's a pain to clean. I keep mine on ceramic tile but I'm considering switching to a bioactive substrate (you can check out this article in Gecko Time: http://www.geckotime.com/bio-active-reptile-substrate/). There are other articles in Gecko Time that deal with many of the aspects you're considering and lots of discussions on these forums as well.
