i just started feeding him 5 wax worms and 5 mealworms every other day about 3 weeks ago. i started feeding him waxworms to see if he would gain any weight because he looked kind of skinny to me. I just got a hold of a scale today so i don't know what his weight was before feeding him waxworms.

He doesnt look very chunky but his tail looks nice and fat which is a good sign.

Are you giving him that set number of worms every other day or is that all he will take? My hatchlings eat 10+ mealworms every day and they are less than a month old. Really you shouldnt limit him to a certain amount if thats what you are doing?

Gecko's usually eat what they need so i fill their dish with what i think they want and they will leave whatever they dont want. If the dish is empty the next day i will increase it a little and visa versa.

The other thing to consider is are you properly gut loading your insects? If not your feeding your gecko empty shells so to speak. And personally i would stay away from wax worms and stick to the mealies.

Hope that helps :)

He looks much higher than 28g. Basically the rule of thumb is if the widest part of their tail is as thick as their neck, they are not underfed. If it's slightly bigger, that just gives you some cushion if he goes on a hunger strike.

If you did want something other than wax worms- because of their addictive nature- I would suggest superworms. Your boy looks big enough to be able to eat a couple of them and they have a slightly higher fat content than mealies.

Also, I agree with Bliss- don't limit the amount he will eat. They will tell you if they are done. HE is old enough to know how much he can eat without overeating.

Okay i'll stay away from wax worms now and start feeding him super worms. i have some giant mealies that i feed my golden geckos and i was wondering if they are to big to feed him?

Usually my geckos at that age were able to eat these with no problem, I guess they actually were around 10g heavier at 6 months, one male was already around 45g but he is way larger than regular leopard. I don't make any restrictions on my geckos diet - I leave them with a bowl full of mealies and refill when needed - and I never experienced any problems with a gecko that's to fat. They just eat as much as they need, not a mealie more :)

Fat is not always the best thing to use when trying to maintain a healthy weight. As long as youre giving appropriate amounts of prey, thats all you need.
It disturbs me to read this after your post in the medical section..

seriously don't keep bringing this up. I had no choice and i finally euthanized him to put him out of his pain when i had enough money. i JUST got my first job and they wouldnt let me take him to the vet intill i had the money myself. don't bring other threads into this when he's already been euthanized. i know he was suffering but i didnt have the money intill i got my first paycheck ever. sorry your disturbed but he's finally in heaven. I dont want lincoln to be unhealthy i just want him more then 28 grams.

+1 I just read her thread and im quite disgusted. I've been on this forum for only a few months now but thats the WORSE thing i've read/ seen on this forum.

I do not believe you should own ANY animals. You honestly don't seem really responsible. I don't understand how you could sit there for days/weeks on end looking at the condition that poor leo was in. You say you had "no choice" but you seem to have quite A FEW animals. If you can't afford to take care of ONE(medically), why do you have 4 ? And theres NOTHING wrong with katie bringing it up. Its quite concerning that your questions all have to do with the HEALTH of your leos. Do you notice a pattern ?

Im sorry to the other members that might think my post is harsh but after seeing her other thread... http://geckoforums.net/showthread.php?t=87904 I had to vent !!!

Just some advice, instead of trying to justify why it took so long and making excuses, how about admitting your faults and accepting that you messed up badly and cost a poor animal it's life. And let the animal deteriorate until your finances stabilized. There is just no room for excuses in a situation like this

I only 'brought it up' because your lack of research is what disturbs me the most.
Yes you had an unfortunate experience with your last gecko (and I think you mentioned you have another 'special needs' gecko at home as well) and that is %100 your fault, no excuses. If someone has a dog with a broken leg, is it acceptable for that dog to wait for their owner to 'get some cash'? No. Its called surrendering your animal to a shelter.
The questions you are asking now, should have been researched ages before you got your new gecko.
I'm glad your finally trying to do the right thing, but the timing is off and it makes me quite sad.

I'm surprised a Moderator hasn't stepped in yet to either close this topic or keep others from posting about other threads. Yes, the two threads could be related and YES, they are by the same person, but that is no reason to continually harass about an event that is not only in the past, but the OP obviously feels bad about.

I see no shame in trying to ensure that her other geckos are in good health since the other thread had an animal in poor condition.

I do not condone the OP's actions in the other thread but I also see no reason to beat a subject to death because that is not helping anything but to push the OP away from a valuable resource of information that could potentially help her with the other geckos in her care.

I would personally ask that either a Mod step in and close this thread or that people try to be respectful in answering the question on THIS thread.
