Hi.

Just going to introduce myself first.

My name is Paul, i have 2 Leopard Geckos which are female (13 months and 18 months) I am new to Gecko keeping (got them on monday) called Thelma and Louise (i didnt name them haha).

Ok now thats over, my problem is this.

The guy i bought the Gecko's off of looked after them well and fed them a diet of crickets and mealworms. However, since i have started feeding them, they have only eaten 1 cricket between them and that was only because it was stupid enough to run into their hide. Other than this, they don't eat unless i hand the food to them and even then, its only mealworms.

This is frustrating for me as i want them to get to know me but i don't want to have crickets escaping left right and centre because they never eat them haha.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys!
Paul

(as a side note, they are living in the same viv they were in at the previous owners house and have all the same decor and substrate etc)

How long have you had them? If they are new, it' s not unusual for them to stop eating for awhile even if they're in the same viv. Just keep offering. You also may want to consult with the person who sold them to you.

If they will eat a cricket that walks right in front of them, I'd suggest removing all structures in the tank so there's nowhere for the cricket to hide either and then put one or tow crickets in and wait for the buggers to start running around. Hopefully they'll eat. If not just wait for them to get acclimated and don't hand feed them unless they're very thin.

Our method for feeding crickets seems to work really well and you may want to give it a try.....

First of all, we use a separate terrarium for our crickets, using fresh kale, carrots, fresh apple slices, orange slices, and Flukers cricket gutload. If your crickets are healthy and taste like apples and carrots your leos will be more likely to devour them.

Now for the method.....I put a few toilet paper tubes in their terrarium so when I go to get out crickets I just remove those paper tubes and shake the crickets out into a small plastic pail. Then I scoop out the proper size crickets one at a time in a small dixie cup, and with a forceps I remove both rear jumping legs and one foreleg. Place those crickets into your feeding dish for the leos (we prefer clear glass petri dishes so the leos can see the crickets). They find them and can eat them easily without chasing and getting stressed. Once they catch on to your new method, they will eat these crickets very willingly!

We try to avoid crickets as much as possible and feed primarily supers and mealies, but a few of our big leos will only eat crickets, so we feed them in this way. Works great.

Good luck.
