But, she's my little buddy. Her name is Lucy, and she was a rescue. When I got her she was badly emaciated, infested with mites, and a large spot on her rear was (and still is) missing quills. Unlike porcupines, hedgehogs do not regenerate quills. She's a sweet little girl, and cute as a button (whatever that means...LOL!). She's about 2 years old now, according to the vet and has been given a clean bill of health.

Here's a pic of me holding her:

The next three pics show her in the kiddy park where I take her to play sometimes:

Too cute. I always wanted a hedgie but never followed thru with getting one. How are they as pets? I've parused a couple hedgie forums and got mixed feelings.

I think she's a great addition to the household. If you're okay with cleaning their enclosure out every other day, mostly to keep the smell to a minimum, then they make excellent pets. I have her in a custom built three-tier enclosure that measures 4'x4'x6'. They're extremely easy to feed since you can basically feed hedgies a high quality cat food. I give her mealworms about twice a week as a treat, and every other day I'll feed her cottage cheese just to insure that she's getting enough fat in her diet. This is the diet my vet recommends, since she was a rescue. Supposedly it'll help her from loosing more quills. However, I hear that you can pretty much feed them the same diet now matter what.

Down the road, I'd love to take in a few more hedgehogs. Unfortunately, right now, I don't have the space that they would require. Considering they're pretty much a solitary animal, it wouldn't be a smart move to house them together. I'm currently in the process of finishing my log cabin in the mountains. I'm having a large room built, sort of a double-basement (if you will), on to the house so it might become a reality sooner than I thought.

Thanks, she is adorable. Her underbelly is soft, and she likes to have under her neck stratched, but the top part is prickly. It can hurt if she's in a bad mood. LOL!!! Like when I wake her up, etc. But, then again, I'm sort of grumpy when my gf wakes me up too. Haha.

Aw Wulf you make me want a hedgie now. Good luck with your cabin, you'll have to post some pix after you get your critter room finished :)

awww :) i want a hedgie :D
they have just got two at my college.. we have an animal academy because they teach a lot of animal management courses.. they got two albino african pygmy hedgehogs. we all entered names for them into a competition and my friend's names won: Dave and Delilah. They are gorgeous but one of them is sooo grumpy and it hurts soo bad when they bite.

I saw some for sell a while ago for about £200. And i know loads of pet shop in the UK that sell hedgehog food in packages :D it's like moist cat food really
