The stuff you have him on now is pretty unnatural too!!

They come from dry, arid areas and slate is as close as you can get to their natural environment.

Yeah, where they live it is very tightly packed sand/clay that makes a surface very close to a slate tile. It may be a little easier to "grip" in the wild, but it's going to be the closest you can get it to "natural".
