Nothing like the first whiff of gecko in the morning....

So, I was handling Tiamat today - had to practically peel her out of her cool hide as she's been brumating I guess. And I noticed that she smelled kind of funny - like the rest of her tank but stronger.

I don't think she's sick - she just ate again today. But are geckos supposed to have a funny smell?

It doesn't stink and doesn't smell like feces it's just...kind of...I don't know how to describe it. Lizardy? lol

The only odor I have ever noticed from my gecko tanks is from
poop!! but I have never had my nose close enough to a leo to
tell if they have any BO or not!

Hm... If she hangs out in the cool hide a lot, why don't you sniff that? Maybe it's getting moldy or something, or just naturally smells weird, haha.

One of my male smells like cooked rice. There is absolutely nothing in his tank or in the gecko room that smells like it. Besides, none of my other geckos in the same room smell like that. So I guess some geckos can have a special smell.

I was thinking that it may be just the combination of stuff I have in the tank. Come to think of it when I first pulled the reptile den out of the box it did kind of smell funny. I washed it and everything but things made of plastics can still have a smell. Her tank's probably over due for a hardcore cleaning anyway.

I know how plastic can be...

I learned to make cookie dough in a glass bowl. I had a batch that tasted like dish detergent.

I actually sniffed my gecko because I was curious, no scent. :D Could be the hide or something. Or she's just a stinky gecko! Which is fine, it makes her an individual. ;)

The only one that I ever noticed smelling was one of our girls that we got as a rescue. The smell went away after a couple of sheds so I assumed that her old home hadn't been really clean. What do you use in your humid hide? Maybe whatever it is is causing the funny smell?

I use frog moss...Hmmm. I should probably switch to paper towels. :\

I think I know what's causing the smell. Not only does the moss smell funny - it smelled kinda weird in the package too, but I've been using this r-Zilla tropical spray stuff that came with my setup. The original water in it is gone and I use tap water with some vitamins D3 and electrolytes in it (seeing as how she gets most of her water from licking the inside of her moist hide anyway), but the same funny smell has remained. I think it's the water bottle.

My leo smells like cheap wine and cigs. I guess he sneaks out at night and parties

I'd just take everything out, give it a good washing and see if it still smells afterwards

Perhaps the damp moss could be what is causing the smell. I know my friend commented on the moss in my fire skinks hide smelling a little funny. Lol, I also noticed a strong smell come from the coconut hides when washed.

I removed the moss and I have to say there's a big difference now. I'm using paper towels for the moist hide now. I think part of it is the water bottle I've been using to mist the hide though. But the smell is going away as I continue to wash out the bottle. The smell isn't as bad as it was.

Thanks, everyone! :D

I have noticed a natural type smell of the moss when I spray it, but I never gave it much thought.

I'm not sure if the moss I was using was 100% natural. It's Fluker's Frog Moss - for all terrariums. Or something like that. Says it's natural but somehow it doesn't feel natural. It's really coarse and the color is very bright forest green....So I'm not going to use it any more. I think I'll stick to paper towels.
