Numbering System

Next season is going to be my first year breeding geckos, as of now I only have 4.9 geckos, but I have 1.2 Gems coming and I am sure there will be more than that before then. Even with those 13 I have now I have 4 projects planned for next year and another one on the way with the Gems, so I will have alot of record keeping starting up really soon with the hatchlings. What I need to know is from you veteran geckos breeders, what kind of numbering system do you guys use to number your breeders, hatchlings, and clutches so that you can go by those numbers and know what morphs the hatchlings are, when they were hatched and all of that important info. I know you can't be TOO organized so I want to start now so that hopefully when I am breeding more geckos I will have my organization where it needs to be. I know that is kinda of a loaded question, so whatever you can help with will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What I do PERSONALLY is I number my breeder geckos 1-40something...or is it 50something? :D Then put their names under it. This goes on their bins.

For hatchlings I do name of parent x name of parent...then hatch date, then number of baby that the pair has produced.

Ex. WesxBombay3-21-06_4

THEN. I have a breeder book, which holds my breeder info. Basically what their name is, their number, their morph, who I aquired them from, hatchdate and what years they were bred, to whom, and what they produced as far as clutches (marking down total # of eggs, #of eggs hatched, #of eggs inferts etc)

THEN THEN. I have a hatchling book. Which I may get rid of. Basically It shows the same info on their sticker (parents, hatchdate, and number baby produced) but I also write down what they were temp sexed for, and if I sell it when I sold it and how much I sold it for.

Thats just me tho :)

My geckos are numbered by their gender, group number, hatch date, and sibling. For example, a female from group 6, that hatched on June 3, 2006, and was the second egg to hatch from that clutch, would be F06-060306-B.

F=female; 06=group #6; 060306= hatch date; B= 'B' of A & B clutchmates.

Thanks Desire and Marcia, what about the Geckos you start off with and do not breed, are they numbered, if so, what sort of number do you use there? Thanks again

You mean ones I buy that aren't of breeding weight or holdbacks? I number them if I have every intention on breeding them. If something doesn't work out, on the breeder page I just put "Sold to such and such for this price." and thats that! I've only sold one breeder thus far :)

Oh, I am sorry, my post was confusing, I was asking Marcia with her numbering systems how she numbers her breeders of which she did not produce herself? I see where what I said confused you Desire, I apologize for that.

I use a short version of the mom's name, her clutch #, which egg , and date.

Example: Bunnie laid 8 clutches this season. Say she her first clutch of next season hatches 6/1/07 and they are males. IDs would be Bun-9A.6.1.07M, and Bun-9B.6.1.07M Bun= Bunnie, 9A & 9B = Bunnies 9th Clutchmates, 6.1.07 = hatch date, M= Male Keeping track of her clutch numbers are easier this way and it's a good reminder of when the female should be retired.

I don't use the males name in the ID cause I know by looking at Bunnies tub who she was bred with (name posted next to hers), and it will be in the file started for that hatchling.

I don't like to use too many numbers because I find it hard to remember them (but if I produced as many geckos as some of you I probably would use numbers). My breeders all have names, so the babies are named a combination of both parents' names with a consecutive number. For example, Topaz (f) and Eragon (m) produced 20 babies, named ERTO 1-20. I have a running list on my computer of each clutch, when it was laid, hatched, the name + number, distinguishing characteristics of the babies, when and to whom it was sold and what the weight was at the time. Each cage has a post-it with name+number and DOB. So far this has worked fine.

I name every single one of my geckos, even the hatchlings. I have not even thought of a numbering system yet. I don't even know If I will ever use one. I don't have many geckos right now compared to most of the people here so It's easier for me to do it this way and I just like them all to have a name. I'm sure I will eventually run out of names but I guess I could always reuse names of geckos that were sold. lol

On each geckos tub there is a sticker with it's name, morph, sex, hatchdate, Breeder, and weight. If I produced the gecko myself it also has the names of the parents on there as well. I have a notebook with all this info also and I keep track of weights,breeding,eggs,and what not in that.
