Odd Circling/Spastic Gecko

Hello there,

First off, i'd like to make clear, I do NOT have an Enigma Leopard Gecko.
I have a normal in-home bred Leo, that is 11 years old, and up until recently in fantastic health and temperament.

As of the last couple months, she has been motioning as if she were an Enigma.
When excited only; she goes a little spastic, and moves in odd circling upon feeding time.

She is not blind, she licks her eyes, eyes dialiting correctly, NO problems shedding.

However, she cannot catch crickets anymore like she used to. She can barely even catch worms. So i've resorted to hand feeding her. Keep in mind, she is ferociously HUNGRY :) So she is not lacking in apetite! Which is a good thing.

Her balance is a bit off, not horrible, but when she's excited she seems to just circle. Her head does NOT tilt or anything, she just circles.

About her home: Up until she was 10 years old she lived with sand substrate - most think it's bad but like i said she had NO problems, never a sand impaction, she was a good little girl. I've always maintained a proper heat/cool area, proper humidity chamber and always a good dose of calcium. Believe me, she was in tip-top condition and spoiled rotten ;) Now that she misses crickets i've changed to paper towel to pro-actively avoid any possible impaction. She is fine with the change, it's been a month, she is pooping & shedding normal!

Anyone have any clue as to what the heck this circling/lack of catching and hunting ability is about? I'm afraid it seems she is unable to eat on her own...if a silk worm is on a dish in front of her she circles to the left, and circles to the right, but never a proper straight on hit for the food until i feed it to her mouth myself.

I'm fearful of the reptile vet here, because he has killed my other lizard, and I don't want to stress this girl out any more than I need to.

Your help is appreciated!

It could be a number of things. Excessive heat can cause neurological symptoms, as can exposure to chemicals. With that being said, I have a female leopard gecko that is most likely approaching 20 years old (I am estimating) and a few years ago she started behaving in a manner similar to what you are describing. Perhaps it is some type of dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

I wish I had an answer for you. I don't, but I just wanted to tell you how lucky she is to have you. :)

I agree with Kelli! Regardless if she is enigma or not she's showing signs of neurological isssues and/or vision issues. even if a animals eyes dilate properly this does not nessecarily mean that the sight is ok. Blind ppl's pupils dilate and constrict. I would say if she is eating and holding weight and seemingly "well" I say leave it be..that is if you are ok with hand feeding her from here on out...it seems your doing very well as a caretaker to this lil girl!! :)

Thanks for everyone's help :) she definately doesn't seem stressed out, just a little weightloss, and can possibly be some sort of dementia. I generally keep her hot part of the tank at about 90-95F and the cooler side at 80F.

Is there any way to tell if she's blind though?

I've tried to move my hand in areas, and she seems to follow it (for me to pick her up and take her out, she still likes that) and i've seen her licking her eyes (which someone told me is a way to tell if she can see or not) but I don't have other "tests" to try.

But, you guys are right, I'm definately ok with feeding her myself, and the fact that she wants food, is a good sign I suppose :)

If she worsens i'll give an update!

Thanks everyone <3

Here is a photo I took of her about 3 months ago:

Maybe it's just because she's my little one, but her tail looks thinner in the 2nd photo (sorry it's a bad angle) but i'll fatten her up :)

First-your 2nd picture didn't work. Second-do NOT go by tail size!! The only sure fire way to get accurate weights on a Leo is a gram scale. Its maybe 10-15bucks at target or wolly world and will be the best thing you purchase for your gecko!

As for the sight thing...Leo's lick their eyes for nurmerous reasons including being to dry or irritation. So just because your leo is licking his eyes doesn't indicate that the leo can actually see..or is having sight loss. I do not know how to tell if a Leo can see or not other then by observation of hunting abilities or the trained Eye of a vet.
