alright im going to a pet storefor my b day and i have $400 for 2 geckos and vermiculte, heating tape,Laying box, but i need to know how to select a super Healthy Gecko, thanks for the input
No offense or anything, but if you want a healthy gecko your best bet would be to /not/ buy from a pet store. Buying from a breeder would pretty much guarantee you would be receiving healthy geckos.
If, however, you do go to a pet store I would recommend picking a gecko that is active, has a fat tail, clear eyes, no stuck shed, and can move properly (not displaying signs of MBD). If you do buy from a pet store you'll also want to take your geckos to the vet for a stool test to see if they have parasites.
Buying from a pet store leads to a lot of excess expenses sometimes, I would definitely recommend buying from a breeder if you want healthy geckos.
Also, doing lots of research before you buy your geckos from any place would be a good thing. Make sure you have your gecko tank/viv set up before you get your geckos, and that you have feeders as well. It makes everything a lot easier in the long run if you are prepared.
I agree with both. Make sure you are completely comfortable with the requirments, care, and handling of leopard gecko issues, health risks, and other problems that might arise.
Well i have bought Leos from breeders and pet stores, both have turned out well. But the pet store i bought the Leos from was a small mom and pop pet store and they took way better care then the big box pet stores!
I would say buy from a breeder or a mom and pop pet store, simply take a look at their cages, clean, little or no poop, well watered, well feed are all signs of properly keeping Leo`s or any other animal for that matter.:main_thumbsup:
Its not the store that makes the animals sick, its who they get them from. It doesn't matter how clean the pet store cage is, its how they lived before the pet store got them.
All the Leos i have ever seen in pet stores were maybe a month old or less. Sometimes they might have a sub-adult 30-40 grams maybe. I belive they get these Leo`s at a super young age and prob pay dirt cheep prices for them like 5 dollars each.
So if they were with a breeder it wasnt for long and it was a very bad breeder, then the pet store got them. Most Leos i see are like a pinky finger long or smaller.
I was at a Big box store the other day and they had a patternless blizzard very nice looking actually about 30 grams i would say. But as i said poop all over the tank, water dish dry, no food to be seen etc. Order from one of the nice folks on Gecko Forums!! I wont mention any names but look at the top of the screen, prob get a good deal to considering the season just got over with and they might have 1 or 2 left for good prices!!:main_thumbsup:
I agree with John. I would buy from a REPUTABLE breeder. There are quite a few on here. If you go with one of them, you know more about yur gecko. Alot of the pet stores out there give you information but it may not always be the best or most acurate information. If you plan on breeding in the future, it is better to know more about the animals that you have. If you just plan on keeping them as pets it is also better to know where they came from so you can avoid an immediate vet bill!!!!
