So I finally broke down and faced my fear of roaches and bought some Dubia's. So they come today and I get them settled in and decided I would try one out in the tank with Clyde seeing as they were packed with food. So here is me trying to grab one with the Tongs...well because I was NOT going to touch one of those nasty little creatures LOL! So as Im trying to get it in the tank it starts climbing up the tongs FAST!!!!!!!!!! Now imagine Clyde is looking at me at this point cause he knows I got something for him....So I got Clyde eyeing up the goods and now a roach SPRINTING up the tongs!!!

So in my best girly DONT WANNA TOUCH THE NASTY BUG SHREEK!!!!! I flick the tongs and the Dubias falls off and into the tank and now is SPRINTING for its life across the 20G Long! (imagine all of this happening in sllllllloooooooow motion :p ) I swear I saw flames flying out of Clyde's ASS as he burned papertowel on his way to full on mouth completley open nose dive into that Dubia and then Nose dive into the glass!!!!!

Now remember Im still doing the hee beee geee beee dance in my best girly voice  (kinda like that but without the smile) and Clyde just Crunches that Dubia sooooooo hard it squirts Dubia juice all over the glass and of course dribbling down his lower jaw!!!!! He gets the bugger down and is now LICKING the dribble from his chin!!! :stunned:

So after all that I get the top back on the bin (currently in a shoebox bin) and I leave it on the floor while I go to get something from the kitchen. I walk back into the living room and there are Dubia's E V E R Y W H E R E!!!!!!

:help: :stunned: :stunned:

My fat lil Chihuahua decided that he wanted the dog or cat food in the bin that he pulled the egg crate out (mind you with probably all 50 dubia's attached) out of the tub onto the floor to get to the food in the bin!!! Now I have NO choice but to use my hands to pick up the little buggers!!!!!

OMG DUBIA'S!!!!!!

Hope you enjoyed that as much as I did :p :p :p

omg My stomach hurts so much from laughing. Thank you for sharing and good luck finding all the dubias.
If you dont wanna pick them up with your hands just put a stocking (knee hight) over the vacuum hose and suck em up,pick em off with the tongs and repeat.....50 times.

Man oh man we need a video of that.. Especially of the dog abetting the escape!! LOL
They are relatively slow movers, and dont move very far so you shouldn't have too hard a time. Most likely they'll find a wall or nook and just sit there. Even it you don't find them, they are a tropical species so shouldnt live too terribly long in Wisconsin. Shouldn't be able to breed or anything.

This is why they're illegal in Florida.

Why because of way too girly girls who shreek too loud when handling?....oh you mean because of escape!! LOL :main_laugh:

I had to share guys as I know NO ONE around me would appreciate this story but Herpers!!! LOL I did catch them...for the most part they stayed on the egg crate..but the tiny ones start to go cruising.

Clyde spent most of the night hunting in the cage for more...so I ordered a Dubia starter kit so I can change over from crickets.

I purchased 50 small from http://blapticadubiaroaches.com/ and it cost $21.

Last night I ordered a Dubia starter kit and egg crates from the Roach Guy http://www.theroachguy.com/

$53 dollars for a starter colony of 190 plus 2 adult pairs. It contains everything I need except the Tub. I also ordered 5 flats of egg crate (its really hard to find around me) for $5.

I would turn your heat off for a couple days and hope it stays below 60 to kill any straggler escapees. Hilarious story! But I think I'm going to have nightmares.

Wait until you order from someone and they don't warn you that they're loose in the box. I started to open a box one time and the roaches all started coming out. I'm pretty sure I screamed as I rushed to tape the box back up.

Mel, I think insects travel with vacationers to Florida just so they can live year round in a warmer climate! Oh, and breed freely too.... People here have them for feeders, knowing they are illegal. I admit that I considered getting some, and know someone almost local to get them from. However, it would be a big risk of being caught by FFW, who can come in at any time and inspect without notice, exotic animal permit holders. We have 2 permits listed at one address, so a double chance of being caught. I'm not willing to take that risk. Some of our friends were inspected just last month.

The Roach Guy does a double box. There is a small box inside the big one but they are loose in the small box so I would undo it over a tub.

That was a great story and of course most peoples worst nightmare. i was like that when i first got my dubia i did most of my dubia movement in the bathroom in the bathtub so it was easier to keep them contained and they could never escape.

When i ordered my dubia ( which i did 5 times from 3 different sources ) i needed a lot of them lol.

for the most part they came in a plastic tub ( different sizes each time ) with egg crate in the container no food or water with lots of air holes. shipped via usps priority. and never had a problem with them being dead. and i was able to open the box with out worry and hold the container over their tub and just spill them out into their new home. Now the one time i did order and they came just in a box filled with cat food and potato pieces. i was a little pissed off.. it was smelly messy and a few dead which made it smell worse.

you got a decent price on the starter colony but with so little adults it will take some time for your colony to take off to where you may want it to be. I started with 1 male to 5 to 7 female ratio. now i have no clue what the ratio is with over 2000 of them. and if you need good quality egg flats for a good price you can always pm me i order in bulk.
