I love roaches but I personally DON'T touch them.. I use an index card to put them in a plastic cup add the calcium and drop them in.. Talking about Roaches I think I should order some and start that colony I keep talking about
I use tweezers to pick them up when feeding to my geckos; I will only use my hand when I need to clean the roach bin, which is once every 2 months. Oh, I wear latex glove too when I need to handle them, I hate that their legs are prickly.
On a random side note, one of the meanest pranks you could ever play on somebody is putting a Madagascar hissing cockroach into the hand of someone who's not expecting it. Their feet are so clingy that no matter how much the person panics, the roach isn't going to fly off.
Honestly, I don't handle the adults. Not because I'm afraid of them, but it's a natural instinct to panic when something that big is flying up your arm at breakneck speed, and almost impossible to shake off! I really don't fear them a bit and have held them numerous times. The babies are just potato bugs to me
Oh and Bonnie, let the roach bin go! The more frass (droppings) there are in there, the healthier the colony will be. The babies live in and eat the frass. I haven't cleaned my roach tub in about 6 months...only picked out the old adults that have died and changed out the egg crates. Since the roach tubs don't stink, it works out perfectly!
I don't have my roach colony yet, but I handle my supers with chopsticks. There definitely is a trick to it as they like to do that flippy, squirmy thing, but with roaches it'd probably be a piece of cake.
They sell, um, insect grippers.
Here, let me find them, I need to order some because I want to feed roaches but DEAR LORD, I'm NOT touching them.
Feeder tongs!!! I always forget what they're called! http://www.petsolutions.com/Feeding-Tongs+I97662210+C40002002.aspx
