THE GREAT GECKO HEIST.

so i used to work for a national PETstore COmpany, and I noticed one day that the AFT we had in our store was looking vvveeerrrryyyy ill, he was extremely underweight, his eyes were stuck shut because they kept him on sand and it got inside them, and things were just not looking good for him, i finally got the manager (after having to say something many times) to get him to the vet....what does she do? puts him in a 5 gallon tank in the back room, saying he will go see a vet soon.....well a week goes by and still sitting there. I felt terrible, i see this little guy suffering, just waiting for his death. I couldn't take it anymore.....so I took him, i already had everything he needed, except for a heat pad, so i bought one. They had no clue where he went, couldn't prove it was me, and now I had my first AFT. This little guy was probably going to die very soon before I heisted him and now I'm proud to say that he is a BIG full grown healthy boy. wen't from a tiny 5-10 gallon tank into an exo-terra LARGE tank that i have decorated to look just like a forest, with everything he could possibly need.......

Then about 5 months later, i noticed one of our new leo babies was looking very sickly, the little girl wasn't eating because the other leos were eating all the food before she could get one, and she also had sand stuck in her eyes. long story short, they put her in the back and forgot about her again....this time it was about 2 weeks with no word on the vet. So once again.....i heisted her out of there, brought her to my girlfriend, we got her all set up and on the road to recovery, and she is now also full grown (she was about a month old when i took her) and in a large exo-terra with everything she could ever need and she has the best mommy any little leo could have, and gets lots of attention and play time.

but yeah....the point of these stories? Idk.....just wanted to share with other leo/AFT lovers :)....I walked out shortly after and flipped that store the bird, i had had enough of them, their TERRIBLE treatment of animals. and the fact that their back room was INFESTEEEEDDDD with spiders, roaches, silverfish, earwigs, and even mice. its disgusting, and this is where the keep all the "overstock" animals. like mice, hamsters, reptiles, guinea pigs. its disgusting. any animal lover that saw that would be sick to their stomach.

How did you fix the eyes? I saw a leo at Petco yesterday. His eyes were shut with extra skin. I assumed it was a bad shed. I didn't know sand could do that. Sand was the substrate.

Yes sand is an awful substrate and should NEVER be used.

The Pros: its cheap and looks good.
The Cons: causes impaction, gets stuck in eyes, it holds bacteria, and the list goes on.

There is absolutely no reason for sand.

Good for you, I know I shouldn't encourage illegal activities. I've been there seeing sick geckos and wanting to save them. Congratulations for not just letting them die.

Well done! It's awesome to hear your reptiles are doing so well. It's a shame they have to be "rescued" at all from stores who claim to be knowledgeable about what they sell. It's quite incredible just how many underfed and sickly looking geckos I've seen in pet stores, even stores specializing in reptiles. It's sick. Good for you!
