Ovulating

Hey, so I have discovered that my female who we are guessing is about 9 months is ovulating. The dot on her belly just appeared today, it was not there last night. I check them every night around this time and it wasn't there last night. I do want to breed her but she is still younger then I wanted and definately not weighing enough so she will wait till next season. My question is, I heard that they may still lay eggs that are not fertilized and that she may need a "laying site" so she doesn't hold on to them. Should I do this or is this true?

Don't worry, if you have a moist hide, that IS her laying site, so you've already provided her with one :main_yes: Just look in her moist cave, and in case you see a squishy soft egg that looks all yellow inside without a pink circle, you know she passed an infertile one and can throw it out. It happens rarely, though.

They always lay in the moist place. If you don't provide a moist hide with paper towels or moss, she might lay in the water dish...

Ok, she has had a moist hide since before he moved in....lol. I had her tank et up a month before I finally got her! I check her moist hide each day to see if it needs a spray so I will find anything if she does lay some duds. She is about 38 grams and eats like crazy so she should be ok.

I don't know what you use as a substrate in the moist hide, but you may see her digging in it if she is going to lay an egg. Also, if she is ovulating she may go on a hunger strike for awhile.

I think you use moss don't you? Mine have laid eggs in moss and during the breeding season I switch over to vermiculite just so they can dig in and I also use it in my incubator to keep my eggs nice and snug. Both are good and if your not breeding this year anyway I'd just stick with the moss. If we got to the March expo remind me to look for sphagnum moss, the stuff they have here is expensive and hard to find. Another reason why vermiculite is good, its like $6 for a huge bag at Home Depot :)

Ive only had one female lay eggs when she wasn't bred, I believe they can also reabsorb them. Was she housed alone at the pet store? Hope she wasn't prematurely mated before you go her, I had that happen once too. If she does lay an egg don't turn it over, use a penlight flashlight to candle it and look for a little pink bulls eye.
