Do you need to wait until the female is ovulating before you put the male and female together? If you house them together will it "cause" her to ovulate earlier? Really newbie question, but this is my first season for breeding and I have seen a lot of activity in one pair and not the other. All the leos are above 55 grams and closer to 78-85 grams...tried to wait til they were really ready, weight wise that is.

Sometimes a male being placed into the females viv can start her up. But I wouldn't leave him in too long, as she may beat him up if she's not receptive. Some males don't take a smack with the tails as a NO and keep trying and a female will retaliate if she's not in a good mood.

It's helpful if the enclosure is big enough so they both have places to retreat to if the female isn't willing. I put my pairs and trio together last night, even though I don't think anyone is ovulating (some are so fat it's hard to tell). All the males tried, all the females said "no" and no one looks worse for wear this morning. I have each group in a 20 gallon long with lots of hides, nooks and crannies.

Thank you both for your responses. The trio gets along quite well together, but I must say since this is the males first breeding season (the male in the photo to the left) he was a bit aggressive at first and then calmed down. Now he is more 'mature' in his approach.
