I was wandering if I used paper towels instead of sand in the bottom of the tank. Has anyone ever done this. Well they eat at it. I m just thinking sands not right cuz when they try to get a cricket they get a mouth full of sand. Thanks much

Let's stay away from yet another substrate debate. Use the search function or just look at past threads in this forum and the Housing one. I think you will see very quickly what I mean about a "substrate debate". Search for "substrate", "tile", "sand", or "paper towels" and I'm sure you will find everything you need to know and more. Good luck!

paper towels would be excellent, i use moss as my substrate but might move on to something else being that its a pain to change out....and sand isnt good at all because it can cause a risk of "impaction" bunch of sand in the bowels of a gecko is bad and can clog him up.

i agree with everyone, definatley use paper towel. it is also really convienient.
i would hate to risk impaction if you were to use sand.
thanks

I use Repti-carpet in my tanks because they can't ingest any of it and I honestly think it's more attractive than papertowels. Paper towels, repti-carpet, and slate tiles are all good choices. Pretty much anything that they won't ingest is fine.

I am not a big fan or repti carpet myself, used it for awhile and didnt like it. It was a pain to wash all the time and after awhile I couldnt get the stains out of it. I am not saying it isnt good or safe, but personally I prefer paper towels or newspaper, alot easier.

well i used paper towels for years. they work great and they cost money with over 125 cages to clean at the high point of the breeding season that can be a rather large additional cost. i understand most dont have quite so much to clean. ive been using black and white news paper for years now (ny post & daily news). not only with my leos but also snakes and baby beardeds. best of all its free. the local deli puts the news papers out every few days and i go collect them. im not looking for a debate on whats better lol just making a suggestion

I have an under the tank heater, and the instructions and other things I've read have strongly warned about having enough material between the heater and the gecko to keep him from getting burned. How much paper towel do you have to put down to prevent this?

You can put newspaper over where the UTH is and put the paper towels over, thats fine.

I went from sand, to paper towels, to slate tile. I am extremely happy with my tile. Cost me under $4 to cover my 10 gallon tank. Easy to clean and no hiding crickets!
