How accurate are they? I will shoot a leo tank at about six inches away and it will say 92 degrees. Then ill move in about 4 inches and it will say 110 degrees? The field of view is 1:1 optics ratio. So is it accurate at a foot away? Or is mine defecive?Any help is welcome.

from what i understand a 1:1 is one square inch by an inch tall. that is where you get your most accurate reading. the most those temp guns should fluctuate is +/- 2-3 degrees either way. i have always had good results using the PE guns. they are not the MOST accurate but they are rather accurate like i said +/- 2-3 degrees either way

I own a PE1 and though (as Robin states ) they aren't spot on temp wise, they are close enough for government work ;)

Temperature guns are lasers that measure the amount of interference as the light waves reflect off a surface and back to the unit... otherwise known as an 'interferometer'. The more concentrated the spot of light is, the more accurate the readings. The farther away, the more scattered the light waves are. Most temp guns have a specified range of distance where that spot of light is optimum, so if you keep it within that range your readings will be more accurate.
