Perilite from Home Depot

I went to Home Depot searching for perilite or vermiculite since I ran out. All they ahd was perilite in the gardening section. The Perilite is made from a brand called miracle grow. And says on the bag it is enriched with miracle grow plant food. Is this dangerous to the eggs? Has anybody used this before? If this is dangerous? Where should I get the correct perilite, and what brand is it?

Thanks!

Do not use the miracle grow enhanced perilite!! It has chemical additives that will harm the egg or kill it entirely. I have bought my perilite at home depot and walmart. It is Scotts brand and there is nothing in it but perilite.

NO!!! I too have tried looking for perlite since I was using vermiculite and decided to try perlite. I went to OSH and bought the exact same product you described and I put a cluch egg in a vermiculite container and the other in the mirical grow thing. The egg in the mirricle grow started getting ruff looking and yellow then moldy.....so dont buy it. I ended up just using the left over stuff in the back yard.

Oh my-might explain why I have 4 perfectly good eggs going bad, but the ones from the old perlite are fine. I went to target, walmart and lowes and finally hd had perlite, but it's the miracle grow kind. I didn't even realize it had stuff added to it, was just super happy to find some perlite. Off to search walmarts again today. Hope I can save these four eggs-and find the right perlite.

the perlite(schultz) at walmart works great if you can find it and the vermiculite(sta- green) at lowes does too.

This stuff is a pain to find. When I go looking for one, I always have to buy the other. Always at the same place. I'm doing a little test this year. Some on vermiculite, some on perlite, and some on Hatch-rite. Either way, I need to go out and buy some more perlite and vermiculite. I'm either out or low.

Lowes usually has one or the other though.

Perilite is a seasonal item. It is a lawn and garden type of product. It is plentiful in the spring and summer and harder to find in the winter and fall. I would suggest buying some extra and keeping it on hand. It's not like it cost a fortune.

I usually have at least two bags around for gardening, but not this year-just hadn't bought it yet.
I read somewhere not to use vermiculite-that some places were no longer stocking it due to the metal levels in it.
