I have pretty much always used perlite. I do plan to swap to vermiculite for my lay boxes since its easier to spot the eggs when digging them out so I'll probably be giving the vermiculite a try in the incubator this season.

altough i havn't had chance to test it yet im going to say perlite because of the way it works. it makes more sense using perlite than vermiculite. iv also had issues using vermiculite and the eggs always failed :( . so this season im using perlite because iv heard its much better and the research iv done on in indicates more success :)

Less error with use of Perlite

Perlite wasn't made to retain moisture. Its used for drainage.I tried perlite and it quickly dryed.i use vermiculite.

In a sealed tupperware, that is the purpose.
Perlite is a volcanic material allowing
airation and drainage (per Hoffman Co.),
keeping the egg from setting on water.
Water drains but does not escape or DRY up.
It supplies humidity around the egg for best
hatching.
When using vermiculite (it also works)
but since it is a volcanic
material designed to retain water
( per Hoffman Co.).....it's easier to get
it TOO wet causing the egg to set in water.
This may pull nutrients from the egg.
Both work but less error is with perlite,
as long as you have a scale to do a
.8 water X weight of perlite.
With vermiculite the practice
would be to have the material damp,
but squeezed of all excess to keep the
egg from setting in "a puddle."
No holes in the container lids will contain
the humidity from start to finish.

Take care. H
