I have a baby gecko..I had to leave them all with my mother while I went off to college. I noticed some eye puckering around the lid last night..And he seems very lethargic..I picked him up tonight..And his eye seems completely clouded over..I can't see a pupil at all..I don't know what happened or what's wrong..And it's too late at night to go to the vet..What are your guys' ideas!?!??! Please..I am extremely upset because I don't know what to do..

Did he shed recently? He might have an eye cap over his eye...

That's what I was thinking. My ball python had those after she spend 6 months in the walls after an escape and I had to do about 5-7 days of daily soaking her eyes with a warm wash cloth to get them off.

Eyes clouded over could either be shed in the eye or infection. If its just a piece of shed in the eye, you can gently flush it out with saline water. If its an infection, you'll need to take it to a vet for medication.

What do I do if it is shed? I have never had this happen before..It looks like he's getting ready to shed..And he won't open it very long..

Contact solution and saline solution are a little different. As long as your contact solution is just straight saline solution with out any of the enzyme cleaneres in it then it's fine. If it's a clean and soak kinda solution not good. You want just PLAIN saline solution.

Well..Hopefully I didn't just screw up his eye..I used my contact solution..BEFORE I got to read this because a vet tech suggested once shouldn't hurt it..He didn't act like it bothered him..I am going to get some mineral oil tomorrow morning..My contact solution is for soft contact lenses that you can leave in for up to a month..:/ Ugh..I hate my life right now..

Don't be so hard on yourself. You have a wonderful support system behind you here with the membership on the forum. They'll tell you exactly what you need to know. I don't trust the techs at my vets office as they don't specialize in herps. Call around to some other vets in your area and really as a lot of questions about their experience with herps and then choose based upon that. Destress, take a deep breath, tomorrow is a new day and things will get better. Just keep up the hard work.. Your heart is in the right place so it'll all work out.

I'm a veterinary technician, but I keep herps, and I feel confident that I know what i'm doing. I would keep this gecko very moist, do a very warm humid soak 2 or three times a day, and I would use a basic eye lubricating ointment until I could get to the vet.

Eye issues and geckos are really nothing to be messing around with yourself.

I agree that plain saline should have been used instead of the contact solution, and unfortunately I don't know enough about the ingredients and the possible effects on the eye.

Mineral oil is better than nothing, if you can't get a hold of sterile lubricant made for the eye. Ask your pharmacist.

sounds like youve got al lthe advice you need.
But remember not to put them in together again, different size geckos can mean serious injuries for the littler one.
:) good luck

the one time use of the solution is not going to damage the eyes any further. So dont think that you have made things worst. just remember we put contacts that have been soaking in this solution in our eyes........ like every one els has said just get some BASIC over the counter eyedrops in the mean time ....

Erick, I see that you are in central Florida.. are you by chance going to Repticon in Orlando next weekend?? If so, Dr. Alfonso will be there, and can advise you on the eye issues. He helps me with a lot of stuff!

The over counter saline I have used for stuck sheds is plain stuff for sensitive eyes, no detergents, just for soaking. I've used it sucessfully for stuck sheds. Just for comparision, I looked at all the ingredients on that box and a saline box from the vet. Only one difference, so I'm taking it to the vet to confirm it. This is also the same saline nurses use to sterilize wounds for dressing. I got a gecko with a real bad eye infection last summer (among other problems) so I try to learn everything I can about treatments. The infection is gone but her eye will take some time to recover. I'm bringing her down next weekend to see the vet again for a checkup.

Unfortunately I had to euthanize poor Titan..His eye infection spread..I took him to the vet and he was on Metacam and Chloramphenicol..On top of two eye drops..The globes in his eyes completely disintegrated and the vet said it would be best to euthanize..RIP Titan..<3
