Hi everyone, I've been having some problems recently.

As an intro, I've had my leopard gecko for almost a year now(purchased last August), and the only other problems I've had with him was a prolapse that went away after some sugar soaks and some scabs that were in his mouth that were removed with moist qtips.
Starting on June 22nd, I went on a 3 week trip, and my grandfather was left to take care of the animals. According to him, my gecko ate normally and he sprayed the moist hide daily.
I came home from the trip to find my gecko with his eyes shut tightly and refusing to open them. I immediately consulted this site and started flushing his eyes out with saline solution. After a week of daily flushes, I eventually got out huge pieces of stuck shed from each eye.
I thought that was it, but now things have gotten even worse. His left eye is now shut all the way and will not open no matter what, and is slightly swollen compared to his other eye. Now the right eye seems to be alright, but he still chooses to navigate with it closed.
He still walks around his cage and comes out of his hide to warm up under his lamp(I use a heat pad and infra red lamp for extra warmth), but since he cannot see, he does not take notice to the mealworms I put in his dish. Just a few days ago, I cut mealworms in half, smeared the insides on his nose, and he ended up eating 4 whole worms. He hasn't eaten anything else since, and he didn't eat for two weeks before that. His tail is still fat though.
Now I've been begging my parents to take him to the vet to get eye medication, but we're in such a tight financial state that we can't even afford a checkup, and now I feel as if I don't deserve to keep this suffering animal.

Now my question to all of you here:

Is there anything else I can do to help my leo, or should I give him up for adoption so someone else can help him? I'll have a hard time giving him away, but I'll have an even harder time watching him walk around with an eye infection I just don't have the money to treat. :( Please help me, this forum is the last place I can turn to for help!

If you can, check his eyelids for any more stuck shed. We had a Leo that had a tiny bit of stuck shed just on the inside of its eyelid. After days of flushing the eye out and trying to wipe it out with wet q-tips I had to very carefully use my fingernails to grab it and pull it out.

If the problem is infection then you might be able to call the vet, explain your situation and see if they'll sell you a tube of eye ointment. Also, find out how much the vet appointment would be to take him in. I'm not sure how old you are but maybe you could baby sit or mow a lawn or two to pay for the visit yourself. My parents were always more receptive to my "wants" when I figured out ways to make some of the money myself.

You might try calling around to some vets (herp), explain your situation, and ask if they will sell you a tube of antibiotic ointment without an office visit. It should run about 10 bucks. If not, your best option is to let someone adopt him who can care for him. I know it's hard to give up a beloved pet but, he will continue to suffer if not treated :(
