I insisted on getting Dubia roaches. LOL My idea was I would get them, breed them, and have enough food for my babies. YUCKY!!! I got them yesterday and about had a small fit trying to get the box open. Not to mention my hubby was having way too much fun trying to scare me. Well I get the box open and there they were in all their roachy glory. I nearly wet myself. So I transfer them to their nice new home and the sound they made just moving around made me want to run away. (side note: they are not nearly as slow as they should be) Well i keep checking on them throughout the day to make sure they couldn't get out. Well feeding time comes around and I am feeling a bit braver. So I open the box they are in and they are no where to be seen. I feel a touch of panic start to rise as I lifted one egg crate after another. I was just about to freak when I lifted the final egg crate and out run the huge ones. Once again I nearly wet myself. My hubby behind me the whole time hissing in my ear. By this time my oldest daughter had run out of the room screaming. My little one was standing beside me completely entranced by the big nasty bugs. Well I can't bring myself to touch them so I grab my tweezers. I dropped one into Roxie's cage praying that she would love them so it would all be worth it. She does, and proceeds to eat four. All is well in the smith home till I go to sleep. I had a nightmare that all the roaches escaped then helped my meal worms and crickets escape and then they all came after us. Needless to say I am super creeped out. The things I do for my babies. At least they love them. My turtle ate one with the utmost excitement. Who knew I would love something so much as to bring roaches into my house on purpose. WOW

I know how you feel!
Except I won't open the rubbermaid container they are in. I make my husband do all the roach dealings. I will even go as far as to have my son bring their food dish upstairs so that I can toss it in the sink and then spray it off without touching it.
Then I'm fine. Then I'll prepare their food.

I just went grocery shopping today and bought an entire seedless watermelon and a bad of apples for the roaches.
D'oh!

I also buy canned sardines for my dog.

I swear half the stuff in my cart ends up being for the geckos and the dog.

I understand your fear of them. I cannot stand them either. I *might* be able to soon pick up the little ones, but I'll NEVER pick one up that is breeding size.

What part of NC are you from? I would have gladly let you come over and look at the colonies and my setup in person to get a better idea about them. They are slow for a roach! but dont be afraid of them they wont hurt you in any way :p

Alaina, you just made me laugh so hard I can't remember the last time I laughed like that. I can see myself in the exact same situation, having the exact same paranoid dream about all the feeder insects forming an alliance and coming after me. :main_laugh:
