Poisoned Pet Foods

Normally this would not be an issue for a reptile board but since my Blue Tongue Skinks have dog and cat food in their diets and other reptiles/inverts are also fed these food items I think that it is very appropriate here
I wans't sure exactly where to post this and since I believe that this is a "rant"-here it is

Most of us have dogs and cats as family members and this affects so very many people

There obviously are still many unanswered questions about just how this all came to be and my heart goes out to those whose have lost their beloved pets
This was not something that should have ever happened -under any circumstances
We place out trust in these companies to provide safe foods for our beloved four legged family members and that trust has been seriously violated

Nothing will ever make up for the loss of the pets that ate the poisoned food and I believe that there will be doubt in all of our minds from now on as to just how safe that pet food is-no matter what brand and what price

Here is the link for more info and the brand names

I think it's kinda funny that the brands that are supposed to be the premium brands were manufactured at the same place as normal grocery store brands. We pulled tons of cans off the shelves because of this. I changed my dog's brand of food, because it was on the list, but the particular kind wasn't on the list. Even though the dog food wasn't on the list, just the cat food. Science diet, is the brand. But yea. I found some all natural stuff that's better anyway. The top three ingredients are meats, versus grains and rice. But yea. I hope they get it fixed and situated soon!

This is one of the reasons I feed my cats (and dog, when we get one) a "natural" brand. We feed California Natural, Innova and Pinnacle. However, they're still businesses - and who knows if at any point they're going to want to save a buck and outsource one or more of their ingredient suppliers. I'm tempted to make my cats' meals at home and totally cut out the business aspect of it entirely.

I can't imagine the pain and anger a pet owner must feel if they've lost their pet(s) due to this. My heart goes out to them.

Yeah, that's one point I wanted to make clear here. This was canned foods only. Dry foods were not affected by the problems.

And I know there are plenty of people out there that regard their cats and dogs as a parent would a child. For those that lost a very close pet due to these unfortunate circumstances, I am truely sorry! :(

Did anyone think that this may be terrorist related? Has that possibility been considered yet? I'm just curious since I haven't heard anything of the sort.

As far as I'm concerned there has been very little info released besides the brand names and identifying the source as wheat gluten from wheat imported from China
Why are they using wheat or wheat by products from China?
We grow plenty of wheat here and so does Canada

IMO - not much seems to make sense so far in the info released
Much more needs to be known as to exactly how this could happen

I also feed mostly dry dog food to my dogs-Beneful and Pedigree are the two brands that I buy
I do buy canned Alpo and Pedigree for the dogs but their main diet is dry along with part of our meals

Our cats get plenty of Frislies Sliced Chicken in Gravy
You bet that I was going through that list-along with countless other people I am sure- to make sure that the brands that I use were not on it

I found myself in the store last night-looking at the canned dog food and I just passed on buying any of it
I did a search on "poisoned pet food" and came up with a bunch of links
this is just one of many that I found

http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=2975912&page=1&CMP=OTC-RSSFeeds0312

The most interesting/bewildering fact so far to me is that vets are puzzled by the renal failure reaction which they say is not typical of poisoning from the toxin( Aminopterin) in question

Again-too many questions and not enough answers

I hope that they don't think that they can just sweep this one under the rug-ain't gonna happen !!
